| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Since 1950, the Freemasons of the Grand Lodge of |

| 6 | 6 | | Texas have designated a week in March to pay tribute to our public |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | school system; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Many of the state's earliest leaders were Masons who |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | led the movement for public education; these included |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Stephen F. Austin and Mirabeau B. Lamar, nicknamed the "Father of |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Texas Education" for successfully advocating for a permanent |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | endowment to support public education; thanks to his efforts, such |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | a fund continues to supplement the education budget today; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, In addition to their influence in shaping policy, |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Freemasons also established schools across Texas, often opening the |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | doors of their lodges to any person with a desire for learning; they |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | championed access to education for all at a crucial point in Texas |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | history, and that dedication to public schools has remained an |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | important focus of the organization; current members contribute to |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | their communities by recognizing teachers with awards and providing |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | scholarships to deserving students; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Texas public schools prepare a diverse student |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | population for the unique challenges of the 21st century, and the |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | success of these institutions relies on the hard work and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | cooperation of numerous professionals and volunteers alike; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, A quality education is vital to the prosperity of |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | individuals, families, communities, and the entire state, and it is |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | indeed appropriate to pause and acknowledge the contributions of |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | public schools to the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 6 through 10, 2023, as Texas |

| 32 | 32 | | Public Schools Week and honor the members of the Masonic Grand Lodge |
