| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, IgA nephropathy, also known as IgAN or Berger's |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | disease, is a rare autoimmune disorder that affects the kidneys and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | can eventually lead to kidney disease and kidney failure; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, IgAN occurs when a protein called immunoglobin A |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | builds up in the kidneys, leading to inflammation that |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | progressively inhibits the kidneys' filtration processes; cases |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | can vary dramatically between individuals, with some patients being |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | asymptomatic and others needing dialysis or kidney transplant; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, While treatment can slow the progress of the disease |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | and prevent complications, there is currently no cure for IgAN, and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | it is estimated that as many as 30 percent of affected individuals |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | will develop end-stage renal disease within 20 years; many patients |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | also experience difficulty getting an accurate diagnosis, which can |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | forestall treatment that can potentially prevent end-stage renal |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | disease; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Further research is needed to improve therapies for |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | IgAN, and today, more than 30 clinical trials are underway for rare |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | kidney diseases, including IgAN; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, The IgA Nephropathy Foundation is a |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | patient-centered organization that is dedicated to the search for a |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | cure for the disorder; the organization seeks to create a powerful |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | patient community focused on funding research, empowering people |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | living with IgAN, and building greater support for affected |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | individuals and their families; and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Through their tireless advocacy efforts, the IgA |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Nephropathy Foundation and its Ambassador Program are helping |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | people with IgAN to live fuller, healthier lives and bringing us |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | closer to ultimately finding a cure for this devastating condition; |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | Legislature hereby recognize the IgAN Foundation and its |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | ambassadors for their outstanding work in the fight against IgA |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | nephropathy and extend to them sincere best wishes for the future; |
