5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Over the past five decades, the Haltom City Senior |
---|
6 | 6 | | Center has distinguished itself as a valuable community resource; |
---|
7 | 7 | | and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The center traces its origins to 1972, when senior |
---|
9 | 9 | | citizens in the area began gathering at an apartment complex |
---|
10 | 10 | | clubhouse on Lower Birdville Road, where they received meals from |
---|
11 | 11 | | Senior Citizens Services of Greater Tarrant County; it was proposed |
---|
12 | 12 | | that Haltom City build a senior center, and five years later, the |
---|
13 | 13 | | municipality provided land and funds from the Housing and Community |
---|
14 | 14 | | Development Act to construct a 5,000-square-foot facility on |
---|
15 | 15 | | Bernice Street; the Haltom City Senior Center opened on May 8, 1977, |
---|
16 | 16 | | under the oversight of Tarrant County; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, In 2019, the city approved plans to renovate the old |
---|
18 | 18 | | library as a new home for the senior center, however the project was |
---|
19 | 19 | | put on hold after the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020; despite the senior |
---|
20 | 20 | | center being closed due to the pandemic, staff and volunteers |
---|
21 | 21 | | continued working, delivering meals, picking up groceries, and |
---|
22 | 22 | | staying in contact with residents who relied on the services |
---|
23 | 23 | | provided by the center; it reopened in February 2022 and |
---|
24 | 24 | | subsequently moved to its present location on Friendly Lane; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Today, the center serves more than 400 members, and |
---|
26 | 26 | | its meal roster includes individuals from 20 cities; through a |
---|
27 | 27 | | partnership with the Tarrant Area Food Bank and Father's Heart |
---|
28 | 28 | | Ministry, the facility hosts monthly food distributions for area |
---|
29 | 29 | | residents, and it provides daily meals in collaboration with |
---|
30 | 30 | | Metroport Meals on Wheels, local churches and businesses, city |
---|
31 | 31 | | employees, and community volunteers; seniors enjoy such activities |
---|
32 | 32 | | as arts, crafts, bingo, quilting, and billiards, and the center |
---|
33 | 33 | | also offers computer classes; the facility continues to add |
---|
34 | 34 | | programs and services while welcoming new community partners; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, For half a century, the Haltom City Senior Center |
---|
36 | 36 | | has played a critical role in meeting the needs of area residents, |
---|
37 | 37 | | and it is indeed a pleasure to join in recognizing the facility on |
---|
38 | 38 | | this special milestone in its history; now, therefore, be it |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
40 | 40 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Haltom |
---|
41 | 41 | | City Senior Center and extend to all those associated with the |
---|
42 | 42 | | center sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
---|
43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
44 | 44 | | prepared for the center as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
---|
45 | 45 | | House of Representatives. |
