| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, All who shared in the life of Chief Shawn Michael |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Snider of the Edinburg Fire Department were deeply saddened by his |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | passing on May 1, 2023, at the age of 58; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The son of Russell Louis Snider and Kathleen |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Peterschmidt, Shawn Snider was born in San Diego, California, on |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | July 10, 1964, and he grew up with the companionship of five |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | siblings, Chris, Richard, Caroline, Jerice, and Michael; he |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | attended schools in Tyler and Pharr; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Snider began his career as a firefighter and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | mechanic with the Alamo Fire Department in 1981, and he rose through |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | the ranks to become a fire marshal; he joined the Edinburg Fire |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Department as an assistant fire marshal in 1991, and he took on the |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | role of chief in 1999; along the way, he served as the emergency |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | management coordinator for the City of Edinburg and briefly held |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | the position of acting city manager; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Respected in his profession, Chief Snider served as |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | president of the State Firefighters' and Fire Marshals' Association |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | of Texas, and he was a regional director for the Texas Fire Chiefs |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Association; he held numerous leadership roles with other |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | organizations as well, including the 2nd Regional Fire Academy and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | the Rio Grande Valley Firefighter's and Fire Marshals' Association, |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | and he served as a fire school instructor and rescue task force |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | leader; among his many achievements, he was inducted into the Rio |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Grande Valley Walk of Fame in 2009, and he was named the 2014 |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Edinburg Firefighter of the Year; in 2018, he received an award for |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Outstanding Service and Leadership in Emergency Management; and |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Chief Snider benefited from |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | the love and support of his wife, Edna Casas Snider, with whom he |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | shared more than three decades, and he took great pride in his |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | daughter, Sarah; he was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | Church, and during his leisure hours, he enjoyed hunting and |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | fishing; and |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, A devoted family man and a distinguished public |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | servant, Shawn Snider lived a caring and purposeful life, and he |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | leaves behind a record of service that will long resonate in the |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | Edinburg community; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Chief Shawn Michael |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | Snider and extend heartfelt sympathy to his loved ones; and, be it |
|---|
| 44 | 44 | | further |
|---|
| 45 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

| 46 | 46 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|---|
| 47 | 47 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Shawn |
