44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, All who shared in the life of Chief Shawn Michael
66 Snider of the Edinburg Fire Department were deeply saddened by his
77 passing on May 1, 2023, at the age of 58; and
88 WHEREAS, The son of Russell Louis Snider and Kathleen
99 Peterschmidt, Shawn Snider was born in San Diego, California, on
1010 July 10, 1964, and he grew up with the companionship of five
1111 siblings, Chris, Richard, Caroline, Jerice, and Michael; he
1212 attended schools in Tyler and Pharr; and
1313 WHEREAS, Mr. Snider began his career as a firefighter and
1414 mechanic with the Alamo Fire Department in 1981, and he rose through
1515 the ranks to become a fire marshal; he joined the Edinburg Fire
1616 Department as an assistant fire marshal in 1991, and he took on the
1717 role of chief in 1999; along the way, he served as the emergency
1818 management coordinator for the City of Edinburg and briefly held
1919 the position of acting city manager; and
2020 WHEREAS, Respected in his profession, Chief Snider served as
2121 president of the State Firefighters' and Fire Marshals' Association
2222 of Texas, and he was a regional director for the Texas Fire Chiefs
2323 Association; he held numerous leadership roles with other
2424 organizations as well, including the 2nd Regional Fire Academy and
2525 the Rio Grande Valley Firefighter's and Fire Marshals' Association,
2626 and he served as a fire school instructor and rescue task force
2727 leader; among his many achievements, he was inducted into the Rio
2828 Grande Valley Walk of Fame in 2009, and he was named the 2014
2929 Edinburg Firefighter of the Year; in 2018, he received an award for
3030 Outstanding Service and Leadership in Emergency Management; and
3131 WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Chief Snider benefited from
3232 the love and support of his wife, Edna Casas Snider, with whom he
3333 shared more than three decades, and he took great pride in his
3434 daughter, Sarah; he was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic
3535 Church, and during his leisure hours, he enjoyed hunting and
3636 fishing; and
3737 WHEREAS, A devoted family man and a distinguished public
3838 servant, Shawn Snider lived a caring and purposeful life, and he
3939 leaves behind a record of service that will long resonate in the
4040 Edinburg community; now, therefore, be it
4141 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4242 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Chief Shawn Michael
4343 Snider and extend heartfelt sympathy to his loved ones; and, be it
4444 further
4545 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4646 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4747 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Shawn
4848 Snider.
