5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Hines Cemetery Association is celebrating the |

6 | 6 | | rededication of the historic burial ground in Edna on May 20, 2023, |
---|
7 | 7 | | the 150th anniversary of the cemetery's founding; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, In February 1873, Joe and Flora Hines purchased 200 |
---|
9 | 9 | | acres of land in Jackson County and set aside 10 acres for use as a |
---|
10 | 10 | | family graveyard; they had been born into slavery and transported |
---|
11 | 11 | | to Texas by Robert C. Hines from his plantation in Hinesville, |
---|
12 | 12 | | Liberty County, Georgia; the couple lived in Henderson, Texas, |
---|
13 | 13 | | before moving to Morales around 1864; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Together, Joe and Flora Hines had 12 children, |
---|
15 | 15 | | including three from her first marriage to Joe Robinson, Alfred, |
---|
16 | 16 | | Joe, and Tira, and the nine children of their own union, Tom, Bill, |
---|
17 | 17 | | Reuben, Mary, Jane, Francis, Rosa, Harriet, and Julia; today, they |
---|
18 | 18 | | have more than 350 known descendants; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, The Hines Cemetery Association was established in |
---|
20 | 20 | | 2017 as a nonprofit organization with the sole purpose of |
---|
21 | 21 | | preserving the historical integrity of the burial ground; the |
---|
22 | 22 | | association's board is composed of descendants of Joe and Flora |
---|
23 | 23 | | Hines, and its original members were Sammie E. Brooks, president, |
---|
24 | 24 | | Beverly Callis Campbell, secretary-treasurer, Hugh Hines, grounds |
---|
25 | 25 | | coordinator, and Leonard Hines, assistant grounds coordinator; |
---|
26 | 26 | | today, the board includes Matthew Wesley Plummer Jr., president, |
---|
27 | 27 | | Bruce Butler, first vice president, Brian Plummer, second vice |
---|
28 | 28 | | president, Robert Hood Jr., secretary, Rolanda Hood Williams, |
---|
29 | 29 | | assistant secretary, Farouk O. Plummer, treasurer, and Carl Freddie |

30 | 30 | | Hines, grounds coordinator; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, For 150 years, the Hines Cemetery has served as a |
---|
32 | 32 | | final resting place for tenacious men and women who braved many |
---|
33 | 33 | | hardships while striving to build a better life for their families, |
---|
34 | 34 | | and its preservation is a tribute to the constancy and devotion of |
---|
35 | 35 | | their descendants; now, therefore, be it |
---|
36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
37 | 37 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the rededication of the Hines |
---|
38 | 38 | | Cemetery on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of its founding |
---|
39 | 39 | | and commend the members of the Hines Cemetery Association for their |
---|
40 | 40 | | efforts; and, be it further |

41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

42 | 42 | | prepared for the association as an expression of high regard by the |

43 | 43 | | Texas House of Representatives. |
