44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The Hines Cemetery Association is celebrating the
66 rededication of the historic burial ground in Edna on May 20, 2023,
77 the 150th anniversary of the cemetery's founding; and
88 WHEREAS, In February 1873, Joe and Flora Hines purchased 200
99 acres of land in Jackson County and set aside 10 acres for use as a
1010 family graveyard; they had been born into slavery and transported
1111 to Texas by Robert C. Hines from his plantation in Hinesville,
1212 Liberty County, Georgia; the couple lived in Henderson, Texas,
1313 before moving to Morales around 1864; and
1414 WHEREAS, Together, Joe and Flora Hines had 12 children,
1515 including three from her first marriage to Joe Robinson, Alfred,
1616 Joe, and Tira, and the nine children of their own union, Tom, Bill,
1717 Reuben, Mary, Jane, Francis, Rosa, Harriet, and Julia; today, they
1818 have more than 350 known descendants; and
1919 WHEREAS, The Hines Cemetery Association was established in
2020 2017 as a nonprofit organization with the sole purpose of
2121 preserving the historical integrity of the burial ground; the
2222 association's board is composed of descendants of Joe and Flora
2323 Hines, and its original members were Sammie E. Brooks, president,
2424 Beverly Callis Campbell, secretary-treasurer, Hugh Hines, grounds
2525 coordinator, and Leonard Hines, assistant grounds coordinator;
2626 today, the board includes Matthew Wesley Plummer Jr., president,
2727 Bruce Butler, first vice president, Brian Plummer, second vice
2828 president, Robert Hood Jr., secretary, Rolanda Hood Williams,
2929 assistant secretary, Farouk O. Plummer, treasurer, and Carl Freddie
3030 Hines, grounds coordinator; and
3131 WHEREAS, For 150 years, the Hines Cemetery has served as a
3232 final resting place for tenacious men and women who braved many
3333 hardships while striving to build a better life for their families,
3434 and its preservation is a tribute to the constancy and devotion of
3535 their descendants; now, therefore, be it
3636 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
3737 Legislature hereby commemorate the rededication of the Hines
3838 Cemetery on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of its founding
3939 and commend the members of the Hines Cemetery Association for their
4040 efforts; and, be it further
4141 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4242 prepared for the association as an expression of high regard by the
4343 Texas House of Representatives.
