44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, James Chappell, a bioscientist and synthetic
66 biologist at Rice University, is the recipient of a 2023 CAREER
77 Award from the Faculty Early Career Development Program of the
88 National Science Foundation; and
99 WHEREAS, Among the most prestigious honors conferred by NSF,
1010 CAREER Awards include five-year grants to support early-career
1111 faculty who exemplify the highest ideals of their profession and
1212 who work to advance their organization's mission; each year, NSF
1313 presents only about 500 awards across all disciplines; and
1414 WHEREAS, Dr. Chappell was selected to receive a CAREER award
1515 for his research on genetically programming microbial communities
1616 in soil, wastewater, and other environments for the purpose of
1717 developing new renewable energy sources; and
1818 WHEREAS, A graduate of Imperial College London, Dr. Chappell
1919 holds a bachelor's degree in biochemistry and a Ph.D. in molecular
2020 biosciences from that institution; since joining Rice University in
2121 2017, he has focused his research on the areas of synthetic biology,
2222 RNA gene control, and functional genomics, and he and another
2323 colleague at Rice, Joff Silberg, were recently awarded a three-year
2424 grant from the Kleberg Foundation to develop genetically encoded
2525 antibiotics; and
2626 WHEREAS, Through his outstanding work at Rice University,
2727 James Chappell has distinguished himself as an inspiring leader and
2828 an innovative researcher, and he may reflect with pride on this
2929 well-deserved recognition; now, therefore, be it
3030 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
3131 Legislature hereby congratulate James Chappell on receiving a 2023
3232 CAREER Award from the Faculty Early Career Development Program of
3333 the National Science Foundation and extend to him sincere best
3434 wishes for continued success in his important work; and, be it
3535 further
3636 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3737 prepared for Dr. Chappell as an expression of high regard by the
3838 Texas House of Representatives.
