5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, James Chappell, a bioscientist and synthetic |

6 | 6 | | biologist at Rice University, is the recipient of a 2023 CAREER |

7 | 7 | | Award from the Faculty Early Career Development Program of the |

8 | 8 | | National Science Foundation; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Among the most prestigious honors conferred by NSF, |
---|
10 | 10 | | CAREER Awards include five-year grants to support early-career |
---|
11 | 11 | | faculty who exemplify the highest ideals of their profession and |
---|
12 | 12 | | who work to advance their organization's mission; each year, NSF |
---|
13 | 13 | | presents only about 500 awards across all disciplines; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Chappell was selected to receive a CAREER award |
---|
15 | 15 | | for his research on genetically programming microbial communities |
---|
16 | 16 | | in soil, wastewater, and other environments for the purpose of |
---|
17 | 17 | | developing new renewable energy sources; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, A graduate of Imperial College London, Dr. Chappell |
---|
19 | 19 | | holds a bachelor's degree in biochemistry and a Ph.D. in molecular |
---|
20 | 20 | | biosciences from that institution; since joining Rice University in |
---|
21 | 21 | | 2017, he has focused his research on the areas of synthetic biology, |
---|
22 | 22 | | RNA gene control, and functional genomics, and he and another |
---|
23 | 23 | | colleague at Rice, Joff Silberg, were recently awarded a three-year |
---|
24 | 24 | | grant from the Kleberg Foundation to develop genetically encoded |
---|
25 | 25 | | antibiotics; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Through his outstanding work at Rice University, |
---|
27 | 27 | | James Chappell has distinguished himself as an inspiring leader and |
---|
28 | 28 | | an innovative researcher, and he may reflect with pride on this |
---|
29 | 29 | | well-deserved recognition; now, therefore, be it |
---|
30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
31 | 31 | | Legislature hereby congratulate James Chappell on receiving a 2023 |

32 | 32 | | CAREER Award from the Faculty Early Career Development Program of |
