| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Brown County are gathering in |

| 6 | 6 | | Austin on February 8, 2023, to celebrate Brown County Day at the |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Situated near the geographic center of Texas, Brown |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | County features rolling, hilly land drained by the Colorado River |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | on its southern border; early settlers came to the valleys of Pecan |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Bayou and Jim Ned Creek in 1856, and the county was formed and named |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | for Captain Henry Stevenson Brown, a company commander in the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | battle of Velasco and a delegate to the Convention of 1832; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Although the county's early economy centered on |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | cattle ranching, farmers moved to the area in the late 1800s, and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | the arrival of two major railroad lines at the turn of the 20th |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | century brought further development; in 1879, oil was discovered |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | near the town of Grosvenor, and commercial oil production began in |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | the county seat of Brownwood in 1917; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Today, Brown County has a population of more than |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | 38,000 people; the county is the site of manufacturing plants for |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Kohler and 3M Company, which both serve as major employers in the |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | area; additionally, Howard Payne University, which was established |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | in Brownwood in 1889, is home to a vibrant community of resident and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | commuter students who benefit from a variety of academic and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | athletic opportunities; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Brown County attracts outdoor enthusiasts to Lake |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Brownwood State Park, which provides ample space for hiking, bird |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | watching, swimming, kayaking, and more; locals and visitors alike |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | enjoy the Brown County Museum of History, located in the old county |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | jail, and the 36th Division Memorial Park at Camp Bowie showcases |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | authentic military equipment and vehicles from World War II through |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Vietnam eras; and |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, The hardworking and forward-looking citizens of |
