| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, May is Older Americans Month, and this occasion |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | provides a fitting opportunity to recognize residents who are older |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | for their many contributions to our state and nation; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, This national observance traces its origins to April |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | 1963, when President John F. Kennedy and the National Council of |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Senior Citizens founded Senior Citizens Month, the prelude to Older |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Americans Month; at that time, there was growing concern about the |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | number of older citizens who lived in poverty and the lack of |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | services available to meet their needs; two years later, the Older |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Americans Act of 1965 established programs to help provide |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | nutritional meals as well as health and social services to |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Americans age 60 and above; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Today, the Administration for Community Living |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | helps oversee the observance of Older Americans Month; the theme |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | for 2023 is "Aging Unbound," and the campaign encourages |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | individuals to explore diverse aging experiences and to discuss how |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | communities can combat stereotypes; this year's event also |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | highlights the importance of staying active by volunteering, |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | working, mentoring others, joining social groups, and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | participating in community activities; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, The Lone Star State benefits immeasurably from the |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | wisdom and experience of its residents who are older, and the |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | observance of Older Americans Month celebrates the vital role they |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | play in our communities; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |

| 30 | 30 | | Legislature hereby recognize May 2023 as Older Americans Month. |
