| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Student Senate of Texas A&M University |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | celebrated its 75th anniversary on October 15, 2022; and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, The TAMU Student Senate can trace its roots to 1910, |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | when the Students' Council was formed through the university's |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Corps of Cadets to enforce the honor system and supervise |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | individual conduct; the group dissolved in 1916, and in 1945, it |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | reorganized as a new Student Council, which provided for the needs |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | of the growing student population and consisted of four class |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | presidents, the cadet colonel, and four regimental |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | representatives; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, On October 15, 1947, the student representatives |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | elected the first president of the body and approved a |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | constitution, transforming the group into the Student Senate; in |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | addition to serving as liaisons between TAMU's students and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | administrators, the members of the Student Senate act in an |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | executive capacity for students both on and off campus; by 1950, the |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | group was recognized as the highest all-student unit in the TAMU |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Student Government, which eventually expanded to include three |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | branches, the executive branch, the legislative branch, and the |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | judicial branch; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Today, the Student Senate includes 80 senators who |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | represent undergraduate and graduate students in the various |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | residencies and academic colleges of TAMU; the group also benefits |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | from the outstanding contributions of its 11 officers, ex officio |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | officers, and numerous student aides, committee members, and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | liaisons; and |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, All those involved in the 75th Session of the |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Student Senate have continued the organization's rich tradition of |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | excellence, integrity, leadership, loyalty, respect, and selfless |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | service, and it is a pleasure to recognize the group for its many |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | achievements; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 75th anniversary of the founding |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | of the Student Senate of Texas A&M University and extend to all |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | those associated with the organization sincere best wishes for the |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | future; and, be it further |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | prepared for the TAMU Student Senate as an expression of high regard |
|---|
