5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Sylvia Trent-Adams was named the seventh |
---|
6 | 6 | | president of the University of North Texas Health Science Center at |
---|
7 | 7 | | Fort Worth on September 12, 2022, and with that appointment, she |
---|
8 | 8 | | became the first Black woman to lead a health science center in the |
---|
9 | 9 | | State of Texas; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, A trailblazer throughout her career, |
---|
11 | 11 | | Dr. Trent-Adams began her work in public health when she joined the |
---|
12 | 12 | | United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps in 1992; she |
---|
13 | 13 | | went on to become the first Black woman to serve the organization as |
---|
14 | 14 | | deputy surgeon general, and she later retired at the rank of rear |
---|
15 | 15 | | admiral upper half in 2020; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, As the U.S. deputy surgeon general from 2015 to |
---|
17 | 17 | | 2018, she was a trusted advisor to the surgeon general on a variety |
---|
18 | 18 | | of critical issues, including federal efforts to combat the opioid |
---|
19 | 19 | | crisis; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Trent-Adams received her bachelor's degree in |
---|
21 | 21 | | nursing from Hampton University and both her master's degree in |
---|
22 | 22 | | nursing and health policy and her doctorate in public policy from |
---|
23 | 23 | | the University of Maryland; through her outstanding work as a |
---|
24 | 24 | | nurse-researcher, she earned the Florence Nightingale Medal from |
---|
25 | 25 | | the International Committee of the Red Cross, the highest |
---|
26 | 26 | | international honor bestowed upon a nursing professional; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Sylvia Trent-Adams has demonstrated a |
---|
28 | 28 | | longstanding commitment to research, education, patient care, and |
---|
29 | 29 | | public service, and she may indeed reflect with pride on all that |
---|
30 | 30 | | she has achieved as she takes on the challenges of her new role; |
---|
31 | 31 | | now, therefore, be it |

32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
33 | 33 | | Legislature hereby commend Dr. Sylvia Trent-Adams on her |
---|
34 | 34 | | appointment as president of the University of North Texas Health |
---|
35 | 35 | | Science Center at Fort Worth and extend to her sincere best wishes |
---|
36 | 36 | | for a successful and productive tenure; and, be it further |
