5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Baytown are celebrating the 75th |

6 | 6 | | anniversary of their city's incorporation in 2023, and this |
---|
7 | 7 | | occasion offers a welcome opportunity to pay tribute to the city's |
---|
8 | 8 | | history and its integral role in the dynamic story of the Lone Star |
---|
9 | 9 | | State; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Baytown is situated at the point where the San |
---|
11 | 11 | | Jacinto River flows into Galveston Bay, and stands adjacent to the |
---|
12 | 12 | | historic San Jacinto Battleground, the site of the decisive |
---|
13 | 13 | | engagement of the Texas Revolution; the area, replete with its |
---|
14 | 14 | | abundance of waterways, was originally occupied by the Atakapa, |
---|
15 | 15 | | Akokisa, Bidai, and Karankawa people; after pioneers arrived and |
---|
16 | 16 | | began establishing settlements in the early 19th century, the area |
---|
17 | 17 | | served as the home of several notable figures in Texas history, |
---|
18 | 18 | | including three Republic of Texas presidents, Sam Houston, Anson |
---|
19 | 19 | | Jones, and David G. Burnet; settlers cultivated rice and later |
---|
20 | 20 | | began harvesting the area's high-quality clay for the manufacture |
---|
21 | 21 | | of bricks; the latter proved a lucrative industry, and over the |
---|
22 | 22 | | course of a century, as many as 12 million bricks per year were made |
---|
23 | 23 | | on Cedar Bayou before being shipped to Galveston; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, In 1908, the Goose Creek Oilfield became the first |
---|
25 | 25 | | offshore drilling operation in Texas, ushering in the development |
---|
26 | 26 | | of multiple communities around the oil industry, including the |
---|
27 | 27 | | "Tri-Cities" of Goose Creek, Pelly, and Baytown; the Humble Oil and |
---|
28 | 28 | | Refining Company began operations in 1919, and Baytown's local |
---|
29 | 29 | | refinery, now ExxonMobil, contributed to the production of airplane |
---|
30 | 30 | | fuel and other vital supplies during World War II; on January 24, |
---|
31 | 31 | | 1948, the Tri-Cities consolidated and became the City of Baytown; |
---|
32 | 32 | | and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Today, Baytown's residents enjoy having access to |
---|
34 | 34 | | such amenities as the Baytown Historical Museum, the Baytown |
---|
35 | 35 | | Sculpture Trail, the Baytown Art Gallery, Yepez Vineyard, and |
---|
36 | 36 | | Houston Raceway Park; the city is also home to the Baytown Nature |
---|
37 | 37 | | Center, which offers visiting birders a glimpse at some of the |
---|
38 | 38 | | species that migrate along the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, |
---|
39 | 39 | | and it boasts the longest cable-stayed bridge in the state, the Fred |
---|
40 | 40 | | Hartman Bridge, which provides fascinating views of the refining |
---|
41 | 41 | | industry that has played such a significant role in the city's |
---|
42 | 42 | | development; and |
---|
43 | 43 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of Baytown may reflect with great pride |
---|
44 | 44 | | on their city's rich legacy of achievement as they look forward to |
---|
45 | 45 | | the many opportunities that lie ahead; now, therefore, be it |
---|
46 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
47 | 47 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 75th anniversary of the |
---|
48 | 48 | | incorporation of Baytown and extend to the city's residents sincere |
---|
49 | 49 | | best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
---|
50 | 50 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

51 | 51 | | prepared for the City of Baytown as an expression of high regard by |
