44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The life of an esteemed community leader drew to a
66 close with the passing of Mary Sanchez Almendarez of Houston on
77 April 29, 2023, at the age of 74; and
88 WHEREAS, The former Mary Sanchez was born in Crabb on
99 February 9, 1949, to Pedro and Petra Sanchez, and she grew up with
1010 nine older siblings, Guadalupe, Jovita, Marcelina, Cruz, Jose,
1111 Victor, Ramon, Pedro, and Christino; following her father's death,
1212 she moved with her family to Houston, where she graduated from
1313 Jefferson Davis High School; and
1414 WHEREAS, While attending the University of Houston,
1515 Ms. Almendarez worked as a teletype operator for the Mitsubishi
1616 Corporation; she next accepted a position with the U.S. Department
1717 of Labor and embarked on a rewarding career as a claims examiner
1818 that spanned more than 27 years; after retiring from the federal
1919 government, she began working as a reservation agent for
2020 Continental Airlines; and
2121 WHEREAS, Civically engaged, Ms. Almendarez contributed to
2222 her community for more than half a century through her volunteer
2323 leadership roles and her support of Democratic candidates; she
2424 served as treasurer of the Texas Democratic Party, as chair of the
2525 Harris County Tejano Democrats, and as a precinct and election
2626 judge; she was also a founder and the first president of Hispanic
2727 Women in Leadership and the first female state president of Image de
2828 Tejas; she was especially passionate about her work helping to
2929 provide scholarships for students as president and scholarship
3030 chair of the League of United Latin American Citizens Council
3131 No. 402; and
3232 WHEREAS, In all her endeavors, Ms. Almendarez enjoyed the
3333 love and support of her family, which included her daughter,
3434 Felina, and her granddaughters, Laurel and Belle; and
3535 WHEREAS, Mary Almendarez possessed a generosity of spirit
3636 that expressed itself in myriad ways, and she leaves behind a record
3737 of service that her loved ones can remember with pride; now,
3838 therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4040 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Mary Sanchez
4141 Almendarez and extend deepest condolences to the members of her
4242 family: to her daughter and son-in-law, Felina Almendarez Carley
4343 and David Carley; to her granddaughters, Laurel and Belle Carley;
4444 to her brother and sister-in-law, Christino "Chris" and Sylvia
4545 Sanchez; to her sister-in-law, Frances Sanchez; and to her other
4646 relatives and friends; and, be it further
4747 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4848 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
4949 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Mary
5050 Almendarez.
