5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The life of an esteemed community leader drew to a |

6 | 6 | | close with the passing of Mary Sanchez Almendarez of Houston on |
---|
7 | 7 | | April 29, 2023, at the age of 74; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The former Mary Sanchez was born in Crabb on |
---|
9 | 9 | | February 9, 1949, to Pedro and Petra Sanchez, and she grew up with |
---|
10 | 10 | | nine older siblings, Guadalupe, Jovita, Marcelina, Cruz, Jose, |
---|
11 | 11 | | Victor, Ramon, Pedro, and Christino; following her father's death, |
---|
12 | 12 | | she moved with her family to Houston, where she graduated from |
---|
13 | 13 | | Jefferson Davis High School; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, While attending the University of Houston, |
---|
15 | 15 | | Ms. Almendarez worked as a teletype operator for the Mitsubishi |
---|
16 | 16 | | Corporation; she next accepted a position with the U.S. Department |
---|
17 | 17 | | of Labor and embarked on a rewarding career as a claims examiner |
---|
18 | 18 | | that spanned more than 27 years; after retiring from the federal |
---|
19 | 19 | | government, she began working as a reservation agent for |
---|
20 | 20 | | Continental Airlines; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Civically engaged, Ms. Almendarez contributed to |
---|
22 | 22 | | her community for more than half a century through her volunteer |
---|
23 | 23 | | leadership roles and her support of Democratic candidates; she |
---|
24 | 24 | | served as treasurer of the Texas Democratic Party, as chair of the |
---|
25 | 25 | | Harris County Tejano Democrats, and as a precinct and election |
---|
26 | 26 | | judge; she was also a founder and the first president of Hispanic |
---|
27 | 27 | | Women in Leadership and the first female state president of Image de |
---|
28 | 28 | | Tejas; she was especially passionate about her work helping to |
---|
29 | 29 | | provide scholarships for students as president and scholarship |
---|
30 | 30 | | chair of the League of United Latin American Citizens Council |
---|

32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, In all her endeavors, Ms. Almendarez enjoyed the |

33 | 33 | | love and support of her family, which included her daughter, |
---|
34 | 34 | | Felina, and her granddaughters, Laurel and Belle; and |

35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Mary Almendarez possessed a generosity of spirit |
---|
36 | 36 | | that expressed itself in myriad ways, and she leaves behind a record |
---|
37 | 37 | | of service that her loved ones can remember with pride; now, |
---|
38 | 38 | | therefore, be it |

39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |

40 | 40 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Mary Sanchez |

41 | 41 | | Almendarez and extend deepest condolences to the members of her |
---|
42 | 42 | | family: to her daughter and son-in-law, Felina Almendarez Carley |
---|
43 | 43 | | and David Carley; to her granddaughters, Laurel and Belle Carley; |

44 | 44 | | to her brother and sister-in-law, Christino "Chris" and Sylvia |

45 | 45 | | Sanchez; to her sister-in-law, Frances Sanchez; and to her other |
