5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Tyler community lost an esteemed resident with |
---|
6 | 6 | | the death of John Sims on March 31, 2023, at the age of 70; and |
---|
7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, John Sims was born on July 18, 1952, in |
---|
8 | 8 | | Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; he grew up with two sisters, and during |
---|
9 | 9 | | his youth, his father called radio play-by-play for the |
---|
10 | 10 | | Philadelphia Phillies; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, A graduate of Temple University, Mr. Sims embarked |
---|
12 | 12 | | on a successful career in radio that spanned more than four and a |
---|
13 | 13 | | half decades; he worked in East Texas for 43 years, serving as an |
---|
14 | 14 | | on-air personality at KDOK before joining KTBB in Tyler, where he |
---|
15 | 15 | | became a news anchor and editor in 1998; in the course of his |
---|
16 | 16 | | tenure, he gained recognition by thousands of listeners for his |
---|
17 | 17 | | distinctive voice; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Sims gave freely of his time and talents for the |
---|
19 | 19 | | betterment of his community; he was president of Leadership Tyler |
---|
20 | 20 | | and the Smith County Community Partnership Council, and he served |
---|
21 | 21 | | as chair of the Tyler Together Race Relations Forum; moreover, he |
---|
22 | 22 | | was active with such groups as the League of Women Voters, March of |
---|
23 | 23 | | Dimes, and East Texas Wheelers and Walkers; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, John Sims earned the admiration of all who knew him, |
---|
25 | 25 | | not only for his professional accomplishments but also for his |
---|
26 | 26 | | exceptional kindness and generosity, and he leaves behind a legacy |
---|
27 | 27 | | that will resonate in the Tyler community for years to come; now, |
---|
28 | 28 | | therefore, be it |
---|
29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
30 | 30 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of John Sims and extend |
---|
31 | 31 | | sincere condolences to his nephew, Tom Stokes, and to all others who |
---|
32 | 32 | | mourn his passing; and, be it further |
---|
33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
34 | 34 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
---|
35 | 35 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of John Sims. |
