44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The strength and cohesion of our communities are
66 enhanced by the devoted efforts of individuals such as Dr. Laura
77 Murillo, whose professional and civic contributions have made a
88 positive and lasting difference in the Houston area and beyond; and
99 WHEREAS, The daughter of Mexican immigrants, Dr. Murillo was
1010 raised in Houston and attended the University of Houston, where she
1111 earned a bachelor's degree, master's degree, and doctorate; she
1212 started her career in student services at the university, earned a
1313 promotion to director of the Urban Experience Program, and went on
1414 to serve as senior executive director at Memorial Hermann-Texas
1515 Medical Center; and
1616 WHEREAS, In 2007, Dr. Murillo assumed her current role as
1717 president and CEO of the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and
1818 in the course of her more than 15 years at the helm, the
1919 organization has become one of the largest Hispanic chambers in the
2020 country and has received the National and Regional Large Hispanic
2121 Chamber of the Year Awards from the United States Hispanic Chamber
2222 of Commerce; she also serves as the founding president and CEO of
2323 the chamber's foundation and as a host for the chamber's radio and
2424 television programs; moreover, she is a frequent political
2525 commentator on Telemundo, and she wrote a bestselling book, Lead in
2626 Life; and
2727 WHEREAS, Dr. Murillo has been active in a range of
2828 initiatives and organizations, serving on the City of Houston
2929 Mayor's Hispanic Advisory Board and holding leadership roles with
3030 the University of Houston, The University of Texas MD Anderson
3131 Cancer Center, and Hispanic Women in Leadership; in recognition of
3232 her endeavors, she has received such prestigious accolades as the
3333 UH President's Medallion, the Ohtli Award from the Mexican
3434 government, and the Top Latino Leader Award from the National
3535 Diversity Council; she is the mother of two daughters, Marisa and
3636 Mia; and
3737 WHEREAS, Laura Murillo has proven herself a business and
3838 civic leader of great vision and ability, and she may reflect with
3939 pride on her successful efforts to make Houston an even better place
4040 for all; now, therefore, be it
4141 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4242 Legislature hereby commend Dr. Laura Murillo for her contributions
4343 to the Houston community and extend to her sincere best wishes for
4444 the future; and, be it further
4545 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4646 prepared for Dr. Murillo as an expression of high regard by the
4747 Texas House of Representatives.
