5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Augustin Ramirez of Austin has brought joy to |

6 | 6 | | innumerable people over the course of his long and noteworthy |

7 | 7 | | career in Tejano music; and |

8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Known to fans as "El Guti," Mr. Ramirez was born in |
---|
9 | 9 | | Lockhart; in his teens, he began playing guitar with such regional |
---|
10 | 10 | | artists as Cisco Rangel y Los Jesters, Los Latinos, and Roy |
---|
11 | 11 | | Montelongo; he also sat in with numerous rock 'n' roll and blues |
---|
12 | 12 | | groups in the Austin music scene; expanding his talents, he |
---|
13 | 13 | | mastered bass, keyboards, and accordion, as well as guitar; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Ramirez formed his own band, and his 1965 debut |

15 | 15 | | album, El Barco Chiquito, yielded the hit single "Ojitos |
---|
16 | 16 | | Traviesos"; his distinctive vocals won him enormous popularity, and |

17 | 17 | | after recording a number of albums for the El Zarape label, he moved |

18 | 18 | | on to Freddie Records; later, he was signed to a major label, |

19 | 19 | | Capitol Records, before choosing to gain creative control by |
---|
20 | 20 | | releasing his own recordings, including his multi-volume series, |

22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, In 1997, Mr. Ramirez was inducted into the Tejano |

23 | 23 | | Music Hall of Fame; four years later, he received a Latin Grammy |

25 | 25 | | a member of The Legends, an all-star collaboration that also |

26 | 26 | | featured Sunny Ozuna, Freddie Martinez, and Carlos Guzman; the |

27 | 27 | | follow-up, Otra Vez Raices, was nominated for a Latin Grammy; his |

28 | 28 | | catalog includes some 80 albums and such popular songs as "Ruina de |

29 | 29 | | Mi Corazon" and "Sangre de Indio"; many of his compositions have |

30 | 30 | | been recorded by other artists, and the Hometown Boys won Best Song |

31 | 31 | | of the Year from the Tejano Music Awards for their 1995 cover of his |

36 | 36 | | accomplishments; now, therefore, be it |

37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |

38 | 38 | | Legislature hereby honor Augustin Ramirez for his contributions to |

39 | 39 | | Tejano music and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued |
