5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Coppell are gathering at the |

6 | 6 | | State Capitol to celebrate Coppell Day on March 2, 2023; and |

7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, The first known settler in what was originally |
---|
8 | 8 | | called Grapevine Springs was James Parish, who moved to the area in |
---|
9 | 9 | | the mid-1800s; in time, a farming community developed, and it was |
---|
10 | 10 | | renamed Gibbs in honor of Barnett Gibbs, a Dallas lawyer, civic |
---|
11 | 11 | | leader, politician, and local real estate investor; strongly |
---|
12 | 12 | | supported by the state's farmers, Mr. Gibbs served in the 1880s as |
---|
13 | 13 | | lieutenant governor; the young town acquired rail connections in |
---|
14 | 14 | | 1888 with the arrival of the St. Louis, Arkansas and Texas Railway, |
---|
15 | 15 | | and in the early 1890s, it was renamed Coppell, in honor of New York |
---|
16 | 16 | | financier George Coppell, who had provided crucial assistance to |
---|
17 | 17 | | the rail line; the city incorporated in 1955; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Coppell today is home to nearly 1,500 businesses, |
---|
19 | 19 | | including 45 corporate headquarters and nearly a dozen Fortune 500 |
---|
20 | 20 | | companies; it boasts a thriving residential community that enjoys |
---|
21 | 21 | | excellent services, exemplary parks, and safe neighborhoods, and it |
---|
22 | 22 | | benefits from its central location at the heart of the Dallas-Fort |
---|
23 | 23 | | Worth Metroplex, only five miles from DFW International Airport and |
---|
24 | 24 | | 30 minutes from both Dallas and Fort Worth; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, In recent years, the city was honored with |
---|
26 | 26 | | consecutive National Gold Medal Awards by the National Recreation |
---|
27 | 27 | | and Park Association, a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence |
---|
28 | 28 | | in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers |
---|
29 | 29 | | Association, and a Certificate of Distinction by the Government |
---|
30 | 30 | | Treasurers' Organization of Texas, in addition to receiving AAA |
---|
31 | 31 | | bond ratings by both Moody's and Standard and a Certificate of |

32 | 32 | | Achievement from the Richard R. Lillie, FAICP Planning Excellence |

33 | 33 | | Recognition Program of the Texas Chapter of the American Planning |

34 | 34 | | Association; it was also ranked 25th among the 100 Best Fleets in |

39 | 39 | | WHEREAS, Coppell Independent School District, a premier |

40 | 40 | | public school system with high-performing schools, is home to more |

41 | 41 | | than 13,400 students, who represent a wide range of countries, |

42 | 42 | | languages, and cultural and ethnic backgrounds; the district is |
---|
43 | 43 | | committed to creating profound learning experiences for each child |
---|
44 | 44 | | and focuses on themes of collective engagement, great teaching, |
---|
45 | 45 | | authentic relationships, and redefining success; and |

46 | 46 | | WHEREAS, Residents of Coppell are building on their past |
---|
47 | 47 | | achievements as they work toward an even brighter future, and it is |

48 | 48 | | indeed fitting to take this opportunity to honor them; now, |

50 | 50 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |

51 | 51 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 2, 2023, as Coppell Day at the |
