5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of the City of Manor are gathering |
---|
6 | 6 | | in Austin on May 19, 2023, to celebrate Manor Day at the State |
---|
7 | 7 | | Capitol; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Located 12 miles northeast of Austin on U.S. Highway |
---|
9 | 9 | | 290 in Travis County, Manor traces its origins to 1836, when James |
---|
10 | 10 | | B. Manor moved his family from Tennessee and settled on prime |
---|
11 | 11 | | prairie land in Central Texas; in 1871, the Houston and Texas |
---|
12 | 12 | | Central Railway Company received 200 acres of land from Mr. Manor |
---|
13 | 13 | | on which to lay out a town and build a railroad station; a railroad |
---|
14 | 14 | | document dated January 10, 1872, declared that the town was to be |
---|
15 | 15 | | named Manor; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The presence of the Houston and Texas Central |
---|
17 | 17 | | railroad greatly benefited farmers, who used its tracks to move |
---|
18 | 18 | | their livestock and dairy products; grain, cottonseed, and cotton |
---|
19 | 19 | | were the principal commodities shipped from the area, with |
---|
20 | 20 | | thousands of bales of cotton loaded onto trains every year; the |
---|
21 | 21 | | railroad helped usher in an era of significant growth for the town, |
---|
22 | 22 | | which by the mid-1880s had a district school, three churches, and |
---|
23 | 23 | | six general stores; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Today, Manor is a vibrant and diverse community with |
---|
25 | 25 | | a population of more than 18,000 residents; one of the fastest |
---|
26 | 26 | | growing suburbs in the nation, it is poised to experience even more |
---|
27 | 27 | | explosive growth over the next decade, thanks to its abundance of |
---|
28 | 28 | | affordable land and its proximity to the capital city and to such |
---|
29 | 29 | | major thoroughfares as Texas State Highway 130; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich history as they work to build |
---|
31 | 31 | | an even brighter future, the citizens of Manor are justifiably |
---|
32 | 32 | | proud of their community, and it is indeed fitting to honor their |
---|
33 | 33 | | contributions to the story of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, |
---|
34 | 34 | | be it |

35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
36 | 36 | | Legislature hereby recognize May 19, 2023, as Manor Day at the State |

37 | 37 | | Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting delegation. |
