55 WHEREAS, Furthering their remarkable legacy of gridiron
66 excellence, the Carthage High School football team closed out an
77 unforgettable year by winning the 2022 University Interscholastic
88 League 4A Division 2 state championship; and
99 WHEREAS, The Bulldogs began their journey to the title with
1010 an undefeated regular-season run that yielded the district
1111 championship; continuing to excel in the playoffs, they bested
1212 Pittsburg, Van Alstyne, Gilmer, and Texarkana Pleasant Grove High
1313 Schools to reach the state semifinals; in that contest, Carthage
1414 clinched a thrilling 42-35 decision over Glen Rose High by scoring a
1515 touchdown with only eight seconds remaining; with the win, the team
1616 punched its ticket to the state championship game for the 10th time
1717 in school history; and
1818 WHEREAS, On December 16, top-ranked Carthage battled No. 6
1919 Wimberley High School for the state crown at AT&T Stadium in
2020 Arlington; delivering impressive performances on both sides of the
2121 ball, the Bulldogs capitalized on forced turnovers and controlled
2222 the line of scrimmage, building an insurmountable 35-0 halftime
2323 lead and going on to triumph by the final score of 42-0; with the
2424 victory, Carthage collected its ninth state title, adding to its
2525 championships won in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2017, 2019, and
2626 2020, and ended the season with a perfect 16-0 record; and
2727 WHEREAS, Carthage was led in the title game by Connor Cuff and
2828 Jakerrian Roquemore, the game's respective Offensive and Defensive
2929 Most Valuable Players, and by Noah Paddie, who tied a 4A state final
3030 record with 191 receiving yards; the Bulldogs also received
3131 valuable contributions throughout the year from each member of the
3232 roster, and these talented student-athletes were ably guided by
3333 head coach Scott Surratt, who secured his ninth title in 15 years at
3434 the helm of the Carthage football program; and
3535 WHEREAS, By accomplishing the rare feat of winning a ninth
3636 state championship, the Carthage Bulldogs have burnished their
3737 school's reputation as a gridiron powerhouse, and memories of this
3838 exceptional achievement will resonate with their fellow students
3939 and their many supporters in the local community for years to come;
4040 now, therefore, be it
4141 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4242 Legislature hereby congratulate the Carthage High School football
4343 team on winning the 2022 UIL 4A Division 2 state championship and
4444 extend to the players, coaches, and staff sincere best wishes for
4545 continued success; and, be it further
4646 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4747 prepared for the Bulldogs as an expression of high regard by the
4848 Texas House of Representatives.
