55 WHEREAS, Mark and Becky Lanier are celebrating the opening of
66 the Lanier Learning Center on June 6, 2023, and this occasion
77 provides an ideal opportunity to recognize the couple for their
88 contributions; and
99 WHEREAS, Highly respected attorneys, Mark and Becky Lanier
1010 have built an extensive compound devoted to theological scholarship
1111 next to their home in northwestern Harris County; the Lanier
1212 Theological Library, established in 2010, is housed in a
1313 17,000-square-foot building designed by Mr. Lanier with a
1414 combination of architectural features that recall the libraries in
1515 and around the University of Oxford; it has a capacity of more than
1616 100,000 volumes, and it focuses on archaeology, Biblical studies,
1717 church history, the Dead Sea Scrolls, Egyptology, linguistics, and
1818 theology; in addition, it holds a comprehensive periodical
1919 collection, historical documents, and museum-quality artifacts;
2020 and
2121 WHEREAS, The ceiling of the library's main hall was painted
2222 by Texas artist Richard McCluskey; he also painted the biblical
2323 scenes on the ceiling of the adjacent Stone Chapel, a replica of an
2424 ancient Byzantine house of worship; the newest building on the
2525 property is the 40,000-square-foot Lanier Learning Center, which
2626 will serve as a seminary-style center for ministry and leadership
2727 development, complete with living quarters for participants; its
2828 great hall has a capacity for approximately 500 people, and the
2929 building features breakout rooms and classrooms as well;
3030 immediately upon its opening, the center will host the Thomas H.
3131 Olbricht Christian Scholars Conference; and
3232 WHEREAS, Generous philanthropists, Mr. and Mrs. Lanier
3333 established the Lanier Center for Archaeology at Lipscomb
3434 University, his undergraduate alma mater; he serves as a member of
3535 the institution's board of trustees; moreover, the couple has
3636 demonstrated a commitment to supporting the advancement of the next
3737 generations of lawyers, and the Mark & Becky Lanier Professional
3838 Development Center at Texas Tech University School of Law is named
3939 in their honor; the Laniers are both alumni of TTU, where Mr. Lanier
4040 obtained his law degree; Mrs. Lanier graduated from the University
4141 of Houston Law School; they are valued members of Champion Forest
4242 Baptist Church, where they have taught biblical literacy classes
4343 for two decades; and
4444 WHEREAS, Mark and Becky Lanier have set an inspiring example
4545 through their support for theological scholarship and legal
4646 education, and it is indeed a pleasure to join in celebrating their
4747 latest project; now, therefore, be it
4848 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4949 Legislature hereby honor Mark and Becky Lanier on the occasion of
5050 the opening of the Lanier Learning Center and extend to them sincere
5151 best wishes for the future; and, be it further
5252 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5353 prepared for the Laniers as an expression of high regard by the
5454 Texas House of Representatives.
