5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of South Padre Island are |

6 | 6 | | celebrating the 50th anniversary of their city's incorporation in |

7 | 7 | | 2023, and a delegation from the community is visiting the State |
---|
8 | 8 | | Capitol to commemorate this occasion on May 24; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, South Padre Island is located on the southernmost |
---|
10 | 10 | | end of Padre Island, a barrier island that spans 113 miles along the |
---|
11 | 11 | | southern coast of Texas; it was named after Padre José Nicolás |
---|
12 | 12 | | Ballí, who was awarded the island's first known land grant; in the |
---|
13 | 13 | | mid-19th century, the southern section of the island began seeing |
---|
14 | 14 | | use as a resort, and during the 1920s, several seaside hotels were |
---|
15 | 15 | | built in an effort to attract more tourists; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, In 1954, the completion of the Queen Isabella |
---|
17 | 17 | | Causeway, which connects South Padre Island to Port Isabel on the |
---|
18 | 18 | | mainland, ushered in a new era of development for the city; this led |
---|
19 | 19 | | local citizens to organize a campaign to incorporate, which |
---|
20 | 20 | | succeeded with a majority vote on April 10, 1973; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, South Padre Island's white sand beaches and |
---|
22 | 22 | | subtropical climate make it one of the state's premier tourist |
---|
23 | 23 | | destinations; the city attracts more than nine million vacationers |
---|
24 | 24 | | each year and offers abundant opportunities for boating, fishing, |
---|
25 | 25 | | parasailing, hiking, horseback riding, and other outdoor |
---|
26 | 26 | | activities; it is also home to the South Padre Island Birding and |
---|
27 | 27 | | Nature Center, where visitors can learn about the diverse species |
---|
28 | 28 | | of birds, animals, and plants that can be found in the area; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, The City of South Padre Island benefits from the |
---|
30 | 30 | | contributions of a multitude of citizens, volunteers, elected |
---|
31 | 31 | | officials, and public servants, who work in myriad ways to preserve |
---|
32 | 32 | | and enhance their community and way of life; this past April, |
---|
33 | 33 | | residents came together for a special 50th anniversary event, where |
---|
34 | 34 | | they affirmed their commitment to honoring the past, celebrating |
---|
35 | 35 | | the present, and embracing the future; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, The people of South Padre Island share an |
---|
37 | 37 | | appreciation for the natural beauty, livability, and strong |
---|
38 | 38 | | community spirit that sets their city apart from others, and it is |
---|
39 | 39 | | indeed a pleasure to join them in marking this special milestone in |
---|
40 | 40 | | their history; now, therefore, be it |

41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
42 | 42 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 50th anniversary of the |
---|
43 | 43 | | incorporation of South Padre Island and extend a warm welcome to the |
---|
44 | 44 | | visiting delegation. |
