5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, A caring and purposeful life drew to a close with the |
---|
6 | 6 | | passing of James Thomas Cain of San Antonio on November 28, 2021, at |
---|
7 | 7 | | the age of 80; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The son of Telford and Lucile Cain, Jimmy Cain was |
---|
9 | 9 | | born in Rosenberg on June 13, 1941, and he grew up with the |
---|
10 | 10 | | companionship of two sisters, Carolyn and Kay; a talented |
---|
11 | 11 | | trumpeter, he played in the band at Plainview High School, and he |
---|
12 | 12 | | went on to attend The University of Texas at Austin, where he |
---|
13 | 13 | | participated in the Goldman Trumpet Trio, the Symphony Band, the |
---|
14 | 14 | | Symphony Orchestra, and the Longhorn Band; during his time at UT, he |
---|
15 | 15 | | met the love of his life, Virlie, with whom he shared a fulfilling |
---|
16 | 16 | | relationship of 56 years; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, After a brief tenure as a teacher in San Angelo, |
---|
18 | 18 | | Mr. Cain was drafted into the U.S. Army; he studied at the Naval |
---|
19 | 19 | | School of Music in Virginia, and he played trumpet at military |
---|
20 | 20 | | functions across the U.S. and throughout Europe; returning to |
---|
21 | 21 | | civilian life, he served as a teacher at Cole High School before |
---|
22 | 22 | | embarking on a 36-year career as a band director at Stevenson Middle |
---|
23 | 23 | | School; he retired from education in 2012; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, A respected leader in his profession, Mr. Cain |
---|
25 | 25 | | served as a clinician and adjudicator for band competitions |
---|
26 | 26 | | throughout Texas for 25 years; he was also an adjudicator and |
---|
27 | 27 | | coordinator for American Classic Music Festivals, and he was a |
---|
28 | 28 | | member of the Texas Bandmasters Association as well as the Texas |
---|
29 | 29 | | Music Educators Association, where he played an active role on the |
---|
30 | 30 | | Region XI board; among his many accolades, he was inducted into the |
---|
31 | 31 | | Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame Class of 2017 by the Alpha Chapter of |
---|
32 | 32 | | Phi Beta Mu; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, A dynamic educator and gifted musician, James Cain |
---|
34 | 34 | | enriched the lives of innumerable people, and he will forever hold a |
---|
35 | 35 | | special place in the hearts of those who were privileged to know |
---|
36 | 36 | | him; now, therefore, be it |
---|
37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
38 | 38 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of James Thomas Cain |
---|
39 | 39 | | and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn his passing; and, be |
---|
40 | 40 | | it further |

41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

42 | 42 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |

43 | 43 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Jimmy Cain. |
