55 WHEREAS, Herman A. Meyer Jr., a legendary figure in the
66 history of the St. Mary's University men's basketball program,
77 passed away on February 4, 2022; and
88 WHEREAS, Born in 1940, "Buddy" Meyer enrolled at St. Mary's
99 in 1961 and quickly gained acclaim on the basketball court; the
1010 first Rattlers player to be selected to the All-Big State
1111 Conference First Team in four different years, he was also an
1212 Honorable Mention NAIA All-American and helped lead St. Mary's to
1313 the national tournament in 1964; after graduating in 1965, he
1414 became head basketball coach at Antonian College Preparatory High
1515 School, guiding the team to the state championship in 1968; and
1616 WHEREAS, That same year, Coach Meyer returned to St. Mary's,
1717 and he served as an assistant coach for a decade before taking the
1818 reins as head basketball coach in 1978; over the course of a
1919 remarkable tenure spanning 27 seasons, he led the Rattlers to 530
2020 wins, 17 conference titles, 13 appearances in the NAIA National
2121 Tournament, and 4 trips to the NCAA Division II South Central Region
2222 Tournament; his crowning achievement came in 1989, when St. Mary's
2323 won the NAIA national championship, and he was named National Coach
2424 of the Year; he further distinguished himself as athletics director
2525 from 1980 to 2001 and helped the school transition from the NAIA to
2626 the NCAA Division II ranks; and
2727 WHEREAS, Coach Meyer's many accolades include induction into
2828 the NAIA Hall of Fame, the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame, and the
2929 St. Mary's Athletics Hall of Fame; moreover, his No. 44 jersey was
3030 retired in 2003, and the Rattlers home court was named in honor of
3131 Coach Meyer and his wife, Anna, in 2007; and
3232 WHEREAS, Renowned for his commitment to the student-athletes
3333 he mentored, Buddy Meyer left an indelible mark on the St. Mary's
3434 basketball program, and his achievements as a player, coach, and
3535 athletics director will long endure; now, therefore, be it
3636 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
3737 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Herman A. Meyer Jr.
3838 and extend deepest condolences to the members of his family: to his
3939 wife, Anna Meyer; to his siblings, Fred and Susan; to his children,
4040 Suzanne, Mary Beth, Jennifer, and Herman; to his grandchildren; and
4141 to all who mourn his passing; and, be it further
4242 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4343 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4444 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Buddy
4545 Meyer.
