| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Herman A. Meyer Jr., a legendary figure in the |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | history of the St. Mary's University men's basketball program, |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | passed away on February 4, 2022; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Born in 1940, "Buddy" Meyer enrolled at St. Mary's |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | in 1961 and quickly gained acclaim on the basketball court; the |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | first Rattlers player to be selected to the All-Big State |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Conference First Team in four different years, he was also an |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Honorable Mention NAIA All-American and helped lead St. Mary's to |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | the national tournament in 1964; after graduating in 1965, he |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | became head basketball coach at Antonian College Preparatory High |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | School, guiding the team to the state championship in 1968; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, That same year, Coach Meyer returned to St. Mary's, |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | and he served as an assistant coach for a decade before taking the |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | reins as head basketball coach in 1978; over the course of a |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | remarkable tenure spanning 27 seasons, he led the Rattlers to 530 |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | wins, 17 conference titles, 13 appearances in the NAIA National |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Tournament, and 4 trips to the NCAA Division II South Central Region |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Tournament; his crowning achievement came in 1989, when St. Mary's |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | won the NAIA national championship, and he was named National Coach |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | of the Year; he further distinguished himself as athletics director |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | from 1980 to 2001 and helped the school transition from the NAIA to |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | the NCAA Division II ranks; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Coach Meyer's many accolades include induction into |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | the NAIA Hall of Fame, the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame, and the |

| 29 | 29 | | St. Mary's Athletics Hall of Fame; moreover, his No. 44 jersey was |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | retired in 2003, and the Rattlers home court was named in honor of |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Coach Meyer and his wife, Anna, in 2007; and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Renowned for his commitment to the student-athletes |

| 33 | 33 | | he mentored, Buddy Meyer left an indelible mark on the St. Mary's |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | basketball program, and his achievements as a player, coach, and |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | athletics director will long endure; now, therefore, be it |

| 36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Herman A. Meyer Jr. |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | and extend deepest condolences to the members of his family: to his |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | wife, Anna Meyer; to his siblings, Fred and Susan; to his children, |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | Suzanne, Mary Beth, Jennifer, and Herman; to his grandchildren; and |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | to all who mourn his passing; and, be it further |

| 42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
