| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Maverick County are gathering in |

| 6 | 6 | | Austin on February 7 and 8, 2023, to celebrate Maverick County and |

| 7 | 7 | | Eagle Pass Days at the State Capitol; and |

| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Located in Southwest Texas, Maverick County was |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | formed in 1856 and named for cattleman and state legislator Samuel |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Augustus Maverick; the county was formally organized 15 years |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | later, and the county seat, Eagle Pass, was established on the Rio |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Grande, beginning its role as a center for travel and trade along |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | the Texas-Mexico border; the city was originally named El Paso del |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Aguila because of the frequent flights of Mexican eagles over the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | area; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Over the years, city and county officials have |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | demonstrated an ongoing commitment to working together to create |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | jobs, encourage young people, and improve the quality of life in |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | their region of the state; civic leaders are also dedicated to the |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | effective collaboration of the public and private sectors and to |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | the administration of an economic development plan that will |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | attract and retain business, industry, and trade while increasing |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | affordable housing; the area's educational opportunities are |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | furthered by the offerings of Southwest Texas Junior College and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Sul Ross State University Rio Grande College, and plans are |

| 26 | 26 | | underway to establish a comprehensive, four-year university in |

| 27 | 27 | | Eagle Pass affiliated with SRSU and the Texas State University |

| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, With three international bridges, including a rail |

| 30 | 30 | | bridge, Eagle Pass and Maverick County have become an important |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | port of entry for international commerce; in 2021, the Port of Eagle |

| 32 | 32 | | Pass handled a record $33.82 billion in exports and imports, making |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | it the eighth busiest border crossing in the U.S.; additionally, |

| 34 | 34 | | the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas provides a significant |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | source of jobs, revenue, and tourism; visitors to the region can |

| 36 | 36 | | also learn about area history at Fort Duncan Park and San Juan Plaza |

| 37 | 37 | | and enjoy outdoor recreation at Maverick County Lake; moreover, |

| 38 | 38 | | they can stroll the streets of historic downtown Eagle Pass, which |

| 39 | 39 | | has been designated as a Texas Main Street City by the Texas |

|---|
| 41 | 41 | | WHEREAS, Even as they celebrate their rich heritage, the |

| 42 | 42 | | hardworking people of Maverick County and Eagle Pass are looking |

| 43 | 43 | | ahead to the opportunities of the future, and they may reflect with |
