44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Sam Bennett of Texas A&M University reached a new
66 level of achievement in his golf career by winning the 2022
77 U.S. Amateur championship; and
88 WHEREAS, Joining the nation's other top amateur players in
99 Paramus, New Jersey, from August 15 through 21, Mr. Bennett closed
1010 out the event with an exceptional performance in the 36-hole
1111 championship round; with Texas A&M golf coach Brian Kortan serving
1212 as his caddie, he gained a three-shot advantage over his match play
1313 opponent during the first 18 holes; he continued his momentum down
1414 the stretch before finding himself clutching a one-shot lead on the
1515 final tee; demonstrating tremendous poise, he parred the hole to
1616 claim a hard-fought victory and the right to hoist the coveted
1717 Havemeyer Trophy; and
1818 WHEREAS, Mr. Bennett holds the No. 2 spot in the World
1919 Amateur Golf Rankings, and he defeated five players ranked in the
2020 top 30 over the course of the U.S. Amateur tournament; by reaching
2121 the title match, he earned an exemption to the 2023 U.S. Open and is
2222 eligible to compete in that event as an amateur or a professional;
2323 he also received amateur-status invitations to the 2023 British
2424 Open Championship and the 2023 Masters Tournament; and
2525 WHEREAS, During his tenure as a member of the Aggie golf team,
2626 Mr. Bennett has twice been selected as a PING First Team
2727 All-American; he was especially impressive over the course of the
2828 2021-2022 season, competing in 10 tournaments and breaking the
2929 school record for lowest stroke average; his efforts earned him the
3030 Southeastern Conference Golfer of the Year accolade for 2022, and
3131 he was a finalist for the Ben Hogan and Fred Haskins Awards; and
3232 WHEREAS, In conquering the U.S. Amateur field, Sam Bennett
3333 has earned a place in the pantheon of elite golfers who have claimed
3434 the tournament crown, and he may indeed reflect with pride on this
3535 exceptional accomplishment; now, therefore, be it
3636 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
3737 Legislature hereby congratulate Sam Bennett on winning the 2022
3838 U.S. Amateur golf championship and extend to him sincere best
3939 wishes for continued success; and, be it further
4040 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4141 prepared for Mr. Bennett as an expression of high regard by the
4242 Texas House of Representatives.
