| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Sam Bennett of Texas A&M University reached a new |

|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Joining the nation's other top amateur players in |

| 9 | 9 | | Paramus, New Jersey, from August 15 through 21, Mr. Bennett closed |

| 10 | 10 | | out the event with an exceptional performance in the 36-hole |

| 11 | 11 | | championship round; with Texas A&M golf coach Brian Kortan serving |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | as his caddie, he gained a three-shot advantage over his match play |

| 13 | 13 | | opponent during the first 18 holes; he continued his momentum down |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | the stretch before finding himself clutching a one-shot lead on the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | final tee; demonstrating tremendous poise, he parred the hole to |

| 16 | 16 | | claim a hard-fought victory and the right to hoist the coveted |

| 17 | 17 | | Havemeyer Trophy; and |

| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Bennett holds the No. 2 spot in the World |

| 19 | 19 | | Amateur Golf Rankings, and he defeated five players ranked in the |

| 20 | 20 | | top 30 over the course of the U.S. Amateur tournament; by reaching |

| 21 | 21 | | the title match, he earned an exemption to the 2023 U.S. Open and is |

| 22 | 22 | | eligible to compete in that event as an amateur or a professional; |

| 23 | 23 | | he also received amateur-status invitations to the 2023 British |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Open Championship and the 2023 Masters Tournament; and |

| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, During his tenure as a member of the Aggie golf team, |

| 26 | 26 | | Mr. Bennett has twice been selected as a PING First Team |

| 27 | 27 | | All-American; he was especially impressive over the course of the |

| 28 | 28 | | 2021-2022 season, competing in 10 tournaments and breaking the |

| 29 | 29 | | school record for lowest stroke average; his efforts earned him the |

| 30 | 30 | | Southeastern Conference Golfer of the Year accolade for 2022, and |

| 31 | 31 | | he was a finalist for the Ben Hogan and Fred Haskins Awards; and |

| 32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, In conquering the U.S. Amateur field, Sam Bennett |

| 33 | 33 | | has earned a place in the pantheon of elite golfers who have claimed |

| 34 | 34 | | the tournament crown, and he may indeed reflect with pride on this |

| 35 | 35 | | exceptional accomplishment; now, therefore, be it |

| 36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |

| 37 | 37 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Sam Bennett on winning the 2022 |
