5	5	WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Brazoria County are gathering in
6	6	Austin to celebrate Brazoria County Day at the State Capitol on
7	7	February 28, 2023; and
8	8	WHEREAS, This section of coastal prairie along the Brazos
9	9	River was settled in the 1820s by members of Stephen F. Austin's Old
10	10	Three Hundred; Henry Smith of Brazoria served as the first
11	11	American-born governor of the Mexican territory of Texas and as a
12	12	leader of the movement for independence; the town of Columbia was
13	13	the capital of Texas during the first Texas Congress, and in 1836,
14	14	Brazoria County became one of the original counties established by
15	15	the new republic; and
16	16	WHEREAS, Farming and ranching initially constituted the
17	17	mainstays of the county's economy; the discovery of oil and sulfur
18	18	deposits in the early 20th century helped the region grow, and
19	19	chemical processing became increasingly important during World War
20	20	II and after; commercial fishing and the recreation industry have
21	21	helped to ensure continuing economic development; and
22	22	WHEREAS, Today, the numerous cities and towns of Brazoria
23	23	County boast excellent schools and affordable housing; visitors and
24	24	residents alike take great pleasure in miles of sandy beaches, bay
25	25	and offshore fishing, scuba diving, outstanding bird-watching, and
26	26	the Brazoria and San Bernard National Wildlife Refuges; the county
27	27	is also home to such attractions as the Nolan Ryan Center and the
28	28	Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historic Site, and the county seat of
29	29	Angleton annually hosts the Brazoria County Fair, one of the
30	30	largest events of its kind in Texas; and
31	31	WHEREAS, The educational opportunities available to students
32	32	at Alvin Community College, Brazosport College, and the University
33	33	of Houston-Clear Lake Pearland Campus further enhance the quality
34	34	of life in the county; and
35	35	WHEREAS, The largest chemical complex in North America, the
36	36	Texas Gulf Coast Regional Airport, and a flourishing health care
37	37	industry are among the major contributors to economic growth in the
38	38	county, and Port Freeport, ranked 15th in the United States in
39	39	foreign tonnage, is one of the fastest growing ports on the Gulf
40	40	Coast; and
41	41	WHEREAS, The people of Brazoria County take great pride in
42	42	their rich history as they work together to build an even brighter
43	43	future, and it is indeed appropriate to take this opportunity to
44	44	honor them; now, therefore, be it
45	45	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
46	46	Legislature hereby recognize February 28, 2023, as Brazoria County
47	47	Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation best
48	48	wishes for an informative and enjoyable stay in Austin.
