H.R. No. 1951 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The members of the Panhandle High School debate team distinguished themselves through their participation in the 2022 University Interscholastic League Cross-Examination Debate State Meet; and WHEREAS, One of the largest tournaments of its kind in the nation, the Cross-Examination Debate State Meet traces its origins date back to 1910, when a small group of debate coaches met in Abilene to establish an interscholastic forensic program; debate is UIL's longest-running contest, and the cross-examination competition has helped countless students develop their skills in public speaking; and WHEREAS, Facing off against other top students from across Texas, the Panhandle High state meet participants included Andrew Menefee, Kelby Olson, Tatum Neuwirth, and McCade Smith; Mr. Olson and Mr. Menefee earned the bronze medal for Conference 2A, and both students also excelled in the Speaker Awards competition, with Mr. Olson placing first and receiving the Gold Gavel while Mr. Menefee finished fourth; throughout the year, the students benefited from the expert guidance of their sponsor, fine arts teacher Sheryl Oliver; and WHEREAS, By earning the right to compete in the state's premier high school debate contest, these determined young Texans have ably represented their school and community, and the dedication they have demonstrated is sure to serve them well in the years ahead; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas Legislature hereby commend the Panhandle High School debate team for its performance in the 2022 UIL Cross-Examination Debate State Meet and extend to all those associated with the team sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
