| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Liberty County are gathering in |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Austin on February 23, 2023, to celebrate Liberty County Day at the |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Inhabited by Native Americans since the prehistoric |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | era, the area that would become Liberty County was home to the |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Karankawa people at the time the Spanish established a mission and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | presidio there in the mid-1700s; settlement increased in the early |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | 19th century, and Liberty County was organized in 1836 as part of |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | the independent Republic of Texas, with Liberty as the county seat; |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | the county originally included all of the future Tyler County and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | parts of what would later be Hardin, Chambers, San Jacinto, and Polk |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Counties; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Situated halfway between Beaumont and Houston, |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Liberty County is bisected by the Trinity River and features both |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Coastal Prairie and Big Thicket terrain; the economy was initially |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | driven by such crops as cotton, sugarcane, and tobacco as well as |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | lumber and cattle, but it diversified in the early 1900s with the |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | increased cultivation of rice and the discovery of oil and natural |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | gas; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Residents and visitors alike benefit from the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | recreational opportunities afforded by the Trinity River National |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Wildlife Refuge; in addition, the county hosts a number of annual |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | events, including the Hull-Daisetta Mayhaw Festival and the Trinity |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Valley Exposition Fair and Rodeo; and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Liberty County is blessed with a rich history and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | abundant natural resources, and its residents may take great pride |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | in their accomplishments as they continue to work toward an even |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | brighter future; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Legislature hereby recognize February 23, 2023, as Liberty County |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable stay in Austin. |
