44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Proud residents of Kleberg County are gathering in
66 Austin on April 4, 2023, to celebrate Kleberg County Day at the
77 State Capitol; and
88 WHEREAS, Situated both on the broad grasslands of the Gulf
99 Coast and on Padre Island, the area that was to become Kleberg
1010 County was first inhabited by the Karankawa and Coahuiltecan
1111 peoples; Spanish settlements were established along the lower Rio
1212 Grande in the 18th century, and after a period of Mexican rule, the
1313 land became part of Nueces County when Texas secured its
1414 independence; in 1853, Richard King established the vast King
1515 Ranch, a large tract of which was used to form the city of
1616 Kingsville in 1904; the new community grew quickly as a railway hub
1717 for farmers and ranchers, and in 1913, the Texas Legislature
1818 organized Kleberg County, naming it for Robert Justus Kleberg,
1919 whose son was the manager of King Ranch, and designating Kingsville
2020 as the county seat; and
2121 WHEREAS, Today, Kleberg County is a place of diversified
2222 industries; successful businesses include Proco, Inc., Texas
2323 Cementing Services, and numerous energy companies; occupying
2424 825,000 acres, the legendary King Ranch is still vital to the
2525 prosperity of the county, and the enterprise has earned fame for the
2626 region through its development of the Santa Gertrudis breed of
2727 cattle, its contributions to quarter horse and thoroughbred
2828 breeding, and its accomplishments in a variety of other
2929 agribusiness interests; and
3030 WHEREAS, The largest city in Kleberg County, Kingsville is
3131 home to Texas A&M University-Kingsville, which includes the
3232 Frank H. Dotterweich College of Engineering, the Dick and Mary
3333 Lewis Kleberg College of Agriculture, the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife
3434 Research Institute, and the Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy;
3535 meeting an increasingly critical military need, Naval Air Station
3636 Kingsville trains 50 percent of United States Navy and Marine Corps
3737 tactical jet pilots every year; and
3838 WHEREAS, The hardworking and forward-looking citizens of
3939 Kleberg County are building on a long tradition of excellence, and
4040 their history and achievements are indeed deserving of special
4141 recognition; now, therefore, be it
4242 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4343 Legislature hereby recognize April 4, 2023, as Kleberg County Day
4444 at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere
4545 best wishes for a meaningful and memorable stay in Austin.
