| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Kleberg County are gathering in |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Austin on April 4, 2023, to celebrate Kleberg County Day at the |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Situated both on the broad grasslands of the Gulf |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Coast and on Padre Island, the area that was to become Kleberg |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | County was first inhabited by the Karankawa and Coahuiltecan |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | peoples; Spanish settlements were established along the lower Rio |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Grande in the 18th century, and after a period of Mexican rule, the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | land became part of Nueces County when Texas secured its |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | independence; in 1853, Richard King established the vast King |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Ranch, a large tract of which was used to form the city of |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Kingsville in 1904; the new community grew quickly as a railway hub |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | for farmers and ranchers, and in 1913, the Texas Legislature |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | organized Kleberg County, naming it for Robert Justus Kleberg, |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | whose son was the manager of King Ranch, and designating Kingsville |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | as the county seat; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Today, Kleberg County is a place of diversified |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | industries; successful businesses include Proco, Inc., Texas |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Cementing Services, and numerous energy companies; occupying |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | 825,000 acres, the legendary King Ranch is still vital to the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | prosperity of the county, and the enterprise has earned fame for the |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | region through its development of the Santa Gertrudis breed of |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | cattle, its contributions to quarter horse and thoroughbred |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | breeding, and its accomplishments in a variety of other |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | agribusiness interests; and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, The largest city in Kleberg County, Kingsville is |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | home to Texas A&M University-Kingsville, which includes the |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Frank H. Dotterweich College of Engineering, the Dick and Mary |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Lewis Kleberg College of Agriculture, the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Research Institute, and the Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy; |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | meeting an increasingly critical military need, Naval Air Station |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | Kingsville trains 50 percent of United States Navy and Marine Corps |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | tactical jet pilots every year; and |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, The hardworking and forward-looking citizens of |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | Kleberg County are building on a long tradition of excellence, and |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | their history and achievements are indeed deserving of special |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | recognition; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | Legislature hereby recognize April 4, 2023, as Kleberg County Day |
|---|
| 44 | 44 | | at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere |
|---|
| 45 | 45 | | best wishes for a meaningful and memorable stay in Austin. |
