5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Kate Johnson of Kyle has greatly benefited Hays |

6 | 6 | | County through her tireless efforts to preserve its historic and |

7 | 7 | | cultural heritage; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The former chair of the Hays County Historical |
---|
9 | 9 | | Commission, Ms. Johnson has played a key role in numerous |
---|
10 | 10 | | preservation projects, among them the restoration of the Kyle |
---|
11 | 11 | | Railroad Depot and Heritage Center and of the 1884 Hays County Jail |
---|
12 | 12 | | and the establishment of the Historic Hays County Courthouse Museum |
---|
13 | 13 | | in San Marcos; she was the driving force behind restoration of the |
---|
14 | 14 | | Kyle home of author Katherine Ann Porter as well, now the Katherine |
---|
15 | 15 | | Ann Porter Literacy Center, which hosts writing programs and houses |
---|
16 | 16 | | a full-time writer-in-residence from Texas State University; under |
---|
17 | 17 | | her leadership, the commission produced 10 documentaries on such |
---|
18 | 18 | | topics as the county's namesake, Jack C. Hays, and local life during |
---|
19 | 19 | | the World War II era; since 2008, the Hays County Historical |
---|
20 | 20 | | Commission has received a consecutive series of annual |
---|
21 | 21 | | Distinguished Service Awards; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Johnson has also worked with other |
---|
23 | 23 | | organizations on the preservation of many area homes and buildings, |
---|
24 | 24 | | including the Buda Stagecoach House, the Winters-Wimberley House, |
---|
25 | 25 | | Kyle City Hall, and the Isham Jones Good House; she has served on |
---|
26 | 26 | | the boards of the Historic Hays County Courthouse Museum and of |
---|
27 | 27 | | Preservation Texas, which she further supported in its initiative |
---|
28 | 28 | | to identify and protect at-risk historic sites; she purchased and |
---|
29 | 29 | | restored two important sections of the Buck Winn "History of |
---|
30 | 30 | | Ranching" mural and donated them to the Hays County Government |
---|
31 | 31 | | Center; she has been a generous patron of the arts and culture as |
---|
32 | 32 | | well, supporting the Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos, the |
---|
33 | 33 | | Burdine Johnson Theater at Hays High School, and the Burdine |
---|
34 | 34 | | Johnson Indoor Studio Theatre at the EmilyAnn Theatre and Gardens |
---|
35 | 35 | | in Wimberley; moreover, she has made significant donations to local |
---|
36 | 36 | | libraries and schools; and |
---|
37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, The Hays County commissioners court presented |
---|
38 | 38 | | Ms. Johnson with the inaugural Kate Johnson Award for Volunteer of |
---|
39 | 39 | | the Year, and it named November 10, 2015, as Kate Johnson Day; she |
---|
40 | 40 | | has also received the Commissioner's Award and two John Ben |
---|
41 | 41 | | Shepperd County Historical Commission Leadership Awards from the |
---|
42 | 42 | | Texas Historical Commission; and |
---|
43 | 43 | | WHEREAS, Through her steadfast devotion to protecting the |
---|
44 | 44 | | heritage of her community, Kate Johnson has earned the respect and |
---|
45 | 45 | | admiration of innumerable people in Hays County and beyond; now, |
---|
46 | 46 | | therefore, be it |

47 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
48 | 48 | | Legislature hereby honor Kate Johnson for her contributions to Hays |
---|
49 | 49 | | County; and, be it further |

50 | 50 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
