44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Kate Johnson of Kyle has greatly benefited Hays
66 County through her tireless efforts to preserve its historic and
77 cultural heritage; and
88 WHEREAS, The former chair of the Hays County Historical
99 Commission, Ms. Johnson has played a key role in numerous
1010 preservation projects, among them the restoration of the Kyle
1111 Railroad Depot and Heritage Center and of the 1884 Hays County Jail
1212 and the establishment of the Historic Hays County Courthouse Museum
1313 in San Marcos; she was the driving force behind restoration of the
1414 Kyle home of author Katherine Ann Porter as well, now the Katherine
1515 Ann Porter Literacy Center, which hosts writing programs and houses
1616 a full-time writer-in-residence from Texas State University; under
1717 her leadership, the commission produced 10 documentaries on such
1818 topics as the county's namesake, Jack C. Hays, and local life during
1919 the World War II era; since 2008, the Hays County Historical
2020 Commission has received a consecutive series of annual
2121 Distinguished Service Awards; and
2222 WHEREAS, Ms. Johnson has also worked with other
2323 organizations on the preservation of many area homes and buildings,
2424 including the Buda Stagecoach House, the Winters-Wimberley House,
2525 Kyle City Hall, and the Isham Jones Good House; she has served on
2626 the boards of the Historic Hays County Courthouse Museum and of
2727 Preservation Texas, which she further supported in its initiative
2828 to identify and protect at-risk historic sites; she purchased and
2929 restored two important sections of the Buck Winn "History of
3030 Ranching" mural and donated them to the Hays County Government
3131 Center; she has been a generous patron of the arts and culture as
3232 well, supporting the Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos, the
3333 Burdine Johnson Theater at Hays High School, and the Burdine
3434 Johnson Indoor Studio Theatre at the EmilyAnn Theatre and Gardens
3535 in Wimberley; moreover, she has made significant donations to local
3636 libraries and schools; and
3737 WHEREAS, The Hays County commissioners court presented
3838 Ms. Johnson with the inaugural Kate Johnson Award for Volunteer of
3939 the Year, and it named November 10, 2015, as Kate Johnson Day; she
4040 has also received the Commissioner's Award and two John Ben
4141 Shepperd County Historical Commission Leadership Awards from the
4242 Texas Historical Commission; and
4343 WHEREAS, Through her steadfast devotion to protecting the
4444 heritage of her community, Kate Johnson has earned the respect and
4545 admiration of innumerable people in Hays County and beyond; now,
4646 therefore, be it
4747 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4848 Legislature hereby honor Kate Johnson for her contributions to Hays
4949 County; and, be it further
5050 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5151 prepared for Ms. Johnson as an expression of high regard by the
5252 Texas House of Representatives.
