| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Johnny Mata has dedicated his life to standing up |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | for the civil rights of all members of society; and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, The son of Mexican immigrants, Mr. Mata was raised |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | by his father in Houston's Second Ward after his mother passed away; |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | he held various jobs in his youth, and after serving in the |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | U.S. Army, he took a job that involved conducting surveys to help |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | residents of disadvantaged neighborhoods to find employment; the |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | job served as his introduction to community work, and he ultimately |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | spent more than three decades as a staff member with the Gulf Coast |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Community Services Association; he also joined the League of United |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Latin American Citizens and became involved in civil rights issues; |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Over the years, Mr. Mata sought to focus attention |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | on civil rights violations, and he has continued his involvement |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | with LULAC for some 40 years, serving as the organization's state |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | director and holding several local positions; he currently leads |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | the Greater Houston Coalition for Justice, and he worked with |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | lawmakers to achieve passage of House Bill 2150 during the 84th |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Texas Legislature in 2015, which helped reform the process of |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | selecting grand jurors; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Johnny Mata has made a profound impact through his |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | decades-long engagement in the struggle for equal justice, and he |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | is indeed deserving of recognition for all that he has done for the |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | people of Houston; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Legislature hereby honor Johnny Mata for his many years of service |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | to the Houston community and extend to him sincere best wishes for |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | the future; and, be it further |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
