44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Johnny Mata has dedicated his life to standing up
66 for the civil rights of all members of society; and
77 WHEREAS, The son of Mexican immigrants, Mr. Mata was raised
88 by his father in Houston's Second Ward after his mother passed away;
99 he held various jobs in his youth, and after serving in the
1010 U.S. Army, he took a job that involved conducting surveys to help
1111 residents of disadvantaged neighborhoods to find employment; the
1212 job served as his introduction to community work, and he ultimately
1313 spent more than three decades as a staff member with the Gulf Coast
1414 Community Services Association; he also joined the League of United
1515 Latin American Citizens and became involved in civil rights issues;
1616 and
1717 WHEREAS, Over the years, Mr. Mata sought to focus attention
1818 on civil rights violations, and he has continued his involvement
1919 with LULAC for some 40 years, serving as the organization's state
2020 director and holding several local positions; he currently leads
2121 the Greater Houston Coalition for Justice, and he worked with
2222 lawmakers to achieve passage of House Bill 2150 during the 84th
2323 Texas Legislature in 2015, which helped reform the process of
2424 selecting grand jurors; and
2525 WHEREAS, Johnny Mata has made a profound impact through his
2626 decades-long engagement in the struggle for equal justice, and he
2727 is indeed deserving of recognition for all that he has done for the
2828 people of Houston; now, therefore, be it
2929 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
3030 Legislature hereby honor Johnny Mata for his many years of service
3131 to the Houston community and extend to him sincere best wishes for
3232 the future; and, be it further
3333 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3434 prepared for Mr. Mata as an expression of high regard by the Texas
3535 House of Representatives.
