| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Nethupa Arachchi, a senior at Bellaire High School, |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | recently completed five years of laboratory research at Rice |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | University, and he is truly deserving of special recognition for |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | this achievement; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, In 2018, the then-13-year-old student began a |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | research project to develop a type of disinfectant that is less |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | harmful to plants; he subsequently earned the chance to work with |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | the Sri Lankan Institute of Nanotechnology to incorporate nano |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | compounds into his experiment, and he and his fellow researchers |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | then presented a proposal to the president of the material sciences |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | and nanotech engineering faculty at Rice University, which invited |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | him to continue his work at that institution; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Through trial and error and many long hours spent at |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | the lab at Rice University, Mr. Arachchi learned which variables to |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | adjust to increase the accuracy of the experiment, and in so doing, |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | he gained knowledge and skills that will serve him well in his |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | future research endeavors; he was also able to experience working |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | in collaboration with a research team, which greatly supported him |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | in achieving his goals; after graduating from high school, he plans |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | to continue his research as a student at Rowan University in New |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Jersey; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Nethupa Arachchi has distinguished himself through |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | his exceptional dedication to scientific inquiry, and this |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | outstanding young Texan may indeed look forward to a future bright |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | with promise; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Legislature hereby honor Nethupa Arachchi for completing five years |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | of laboratory research at Rice University and extend to him sincere |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | best wishes for continued success; and, be it further |
