55 WHEREAS, Bellaire High School in the Houston Independent
66 School District received the AP Computer Science Female Diversity
77 Award from College Board; and
88 WHEREAS, College Board is a national nonprofit organization
99 dedicated to promoting excellence and equity in education, and it
1010 also administers a number of college readiness and success
1111 programs, including the Advanced Placement Program; the AP Computer
1212 Science Female Diversity Award honors schools that have achieved
1313 either 50 percent or higher representation of female exam takers in
1414 one or both AP computer science courses, or a percentage of female
1515 exam takers that meets or exceeds that of the school's female
1616 population; of the 20,000 institutions that offer AP courses, fewer
1717 than 1,200 schools nationwide reached that worthy goal; and
1818 WHEREAS, Historically, female students have remained
1919 underrepresented in computer science classes, and according to the
2020 National Girls Collaborative Project, women represent just 26
2121 percent of professionals in the fields of computer and mathematical
2222 sciences today; and
2323 WHEREAS, Providing female students with access to computer
2424 science courses is vital to ensuring gender parity within the
2525 industry, and the AP Computer Science program at Bellaire High
2626 School is empowering young women to build an even brighter future as
2727 they work to become the next generation of STEM and computer science
2828 professionals; now, therefore, be it
2929 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
3030 Legislature hereby congratulate Bellaire High School on its receipt
3131 of the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award from College
3232 Board and extend to all those associated with the school sincere
3333 best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
3434 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3535 prepared for the school as an expression of high regard by the Texas
3636 House of Representatives.
