44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The Honorable William Edward Moody has served with
66 distinction as presiding judge of the 34th District Court in
77 El Paso County for 36 years; and
88 WHEREAS, Appointed in 1986 at the age of 36, Judge Bill Moody
99 was then one of the youngest judges on the bench; he has since been
1010 elected nine times and now ranks as the longest-serving judge in the
1111 history of El Paso; during his remarkable tenure, he has presided
1212 over more than 800 felony and civil cases, including five capital
1313 murder cases; he has also served as presiding judge for the 6th
1414 Administrative Judicial Region of Texas and for the Council of
1515 Judges of El Paso County; in 2001, he successfully led the fight to
1616 increase juror pay in the county, and four years later, he was the
1717 lead witness before the legislature in the successful effort to
1818 raise juror pay across the state; he is the recipient of an
1919 Outstanding Service Award from the American Board of Trial
2020 Advocates; and
2121 WHEREAS, Before taking the bench, Judge Moody held the
2222 position of first assistant district attorney in El Paso; he was a
2323 member of the Texas Ethics Commission for three years and further
2424 distinguished himself as its vice chair; a veteran of the U.S. Army,
2525 he holds a bachelor's degree with honors from The University of
2626 Texas at El Paso and a law degree from Texas Tech University, and he
2727 is currently working on a master's degree in history; and
2828 WHEREAS, Judge Moody has served in leadership roles with many
2929 civic organizations, among them the advisory boards of the El Paso
3030 Boy Scouts, Yucca Council, and the El Paso Museum of History, and he
3131 served three terms on the board of the El Paso County Historical
3232 Society; currently, he is president of GiGi's Playhouse El Paso,
3333 which offers programs for children and adults with Down syndrome;
3434 he has been recognized for his community involvement by the El Paso
3535 Hispanic Chamber of Commerce; and
3636 WHEREAS, Over the course of his long and rewarding career,
3737 Judge Moody has earned the respect and admiration of all who know
3838 him, and it is indeed a privilege to join with residents of El Paso
3939 County in honoring him for his outstanding public service; now,
4040 therefore, be it
4141 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4242 Legislature hereby honor Judge William Edward Moody for his service
4343 to the 34th District Court in El Paso County and extend to him
4444 sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
4545 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4646 prepared for Judge Moody as an expression of high regard by the
4747 Texas House of Representatives.
