5	5	WHEREAS, The Dumas High School boys' and girls' wrestling
6	6	teams distinguished themselves with their exceptional performances
7	7	during the 2022-2023 season, furthering their city's strong
8	8	tradition of excellence in the sport; and
9	9	WHEREAS, In just their fourth year of competition, the Dumas
10	10	High girls' team added a new chapter to the rich legacy of the
11	11	school's wrestling program; at the Texas State 5A Dual
12	12	Championships in January, the Demonettes secured three dominant
13	13	wins against Azle, Lubbock, and Richmond Foster High Schools to
14	14	clinch the title; Berkley Funderburg was named Outstanding Wrestler
15	15	at the tournament, going 3-0 with two pins and a 2-0 decision in the
16	16	finals; the team also benefited from undefeated performances from
17	17	Elaina Morgan and Audi Pichardo and from wins by Emily Loya, Andrea
18	18	Aguirre, Ximena Giron, Angel Sanchez, Jolee Jones, Serese Guillen,
19	19	and Kennedi Purcell; and
20	20	WHEREAS, At the 2023 UIL Wrestling State Tournament, held on
21	21	February 17 and 18 at the Berry Center in Cypress, the Demonettes
22	22	captured the bronze medal in the 5A team competition; individually,
23	23	Ms. Jones received the silver medal in the 235-pound weight class,
24	24	and bronze medals were collected by Ms. Morgan in the 138-pound
25	25	division and Ms. Loya in the 126-pound division; throughout the
26	26	season, the squad was led by first-year head coach Chris Holzworth
27	27	and assistant coach Katie Ruiz; and
28	28	WHEREAS, The boys' team also excelled at the state meet,
29	29	finishing fourth among the 5A competitors; for the second year in a
30	30	row, individual state titles were won by Hunter Bogner in the
31	31	126-pound division and Bronson Baxter in the 150-pound division;
32	32	the Demons also tallied fourth place finishes from Daniel Acosta in
33	33	the 138-pound division and Jackson Moss in the 165-pound division;
34	34	Dumas was also represented at state by Brandon Smith at 132 pounds,
35	35	Ezven Venzor at 144 pounds, and Alberto Sanchez at 190 pounds; the
36	36	Demons were guided by head coach Sion King in his inaugural season
37	37	at the helm of the program; and
38	38	WHEREAS, Through their skill, hard work, and enduring
39	39	commitment to excellence, the Dumas Demons and Demonettes have once
40	40	again earned a place among the top wrestling teams in the Lone Star
41	41	State, and they are a source of tremendous pride to their classmates
42	42	and their many supporters in the local community; now, therefore,
43	43	be it
44	44	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
45	45	Legislature hereby congratulate the Dumas High School boys' and
46	46	girls' wrestling teams on their success during the 2022-2023 season
47	47	and extend to the athletes, coaches, and staff sincere best wishes
48	48	for the future; and, be it further
49	49	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
50	50	prepared for the teams as an expression of high regard by the Texas
51	51	House of Representatives.
