5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Chambers County lost a beloved resident with the |

6 | 6 | | passing of Linnie Evelyn Stephenson Standley of Smith Point on |
---|
7 | 7 | | May 11, 2023, at the age of 101; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The daughter of Jessie Ralph Stephenson and Ruby |
---|
9 | 9 | | Lena Nelson, the former Evelyn Stephenson was born in Corpus |
---|
10 | 10 | | Christi on May 11, 1922; she grew up as the oldest of seven |
---|
11 | 11 | | siblings, and in 1927 her family moved to Smith Point, where she |
---|
12 | 12 | | began her education in a one-room schoolhouse; she then lived in |
---|
13 | 13 | | Galveston with her grandmother for three years to attend Ball High |
---|
14 | 14 | | School; after graduation, she married Morris Standley on September |
---|
15 | 15 | | 9, 1940; they were blessed with a son, Ronald Morris Standley; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Standley began working for the Anahuac |
---|
17 | 17 | | Independent School District in 1945 as a bus driver; she gladly |
---|
18 | 18 | | performed any task that needed to be done, and during summers, she |
---|
19 | 19 | | helped her husband build a 40-foot shrimp boat; having taken |
---|
20 | 20 | | college courses to become a dietician, she eventually oversaw three |
---|
21 | 21 | | school cafeterias; she retired from Anahuac ISD in 1988; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Dedicated to her community, Mrs. Standley was a |
---|
23 | 23 | | founding member and an emergency care assistant for the Smith Point |
---|
24 | 24 | | Volunteer Fire Department; for decades, she served both that |
---|
25 | 25 | | department and Chambers County Fire and Rescue as treasurer and |
---|
26 | 26 | | secretary; a lifelong member of Smith Point Community Church, she |
---|
27 | 27 | | also served the church as secretary and treasurer for over 40 years |
---|
28 | 28 | | and taught Sunday school as well; she kept the books for numerous |
---|
29 | 29 | | groups and gave generously of her time and talents to a host of |
---|
30 | 30 | | organizations, among them the Chambers County 4-H Horse Club, |
---|
31 | 31 | | American Legion Auxiliary, and the United Daughters of the |
---|
32 | 32 | | Confederacy; moreover, she shared her knowledge extensively with |
---|
33 | 33 | | the Chambers County Historical Commission for the benefit of future |
---|
34 | 34 | | generations, donated items with detailed information, and helped |
---|
35 | 35 | | tend cemeteries and place markers; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Evelyn Standley made a lasting, positive difference |
---|
37 | 37 | | through her wide-ranging contributions, and she will be remembered |
---|
38 | 38 | | with deep admiration and affection by all who were privileged to |
---|
39 | 39 | | know her; now, therefore, be it |
---|
40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
41 | 41 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Linnie Evelyn |
---|
42 | 42 | | Stephenson Standley and extend sincere condolences to the members |
---|
43 | 43 | | of her family: to her daughter-in-heart, Linda Vaughan, and her |
---|
44 | 44 | | husband, Bugs; to her grandchildren, Morris Dwayne Standley and his |
---|
45 | 45 | | wife, Michele, Dustin Lynn Standley and his wife, Julie, Davonna |
---|
46 | 46 | | Marie Wilson and her husband, Phillip, John Louis Cionek and his |
---|
47 | 47 | | wife, Janet, Clayton Ray Vaughan and his wife, Tiffany, and Brandon |

48 | 48 | | Cole Vaughan; to her brother, Charles Jesse "Tootie" Stephenson; to |
