44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Chambers County lost a beloved resident with the
66 passing of Linnie Evelyn Stephenson Standley of Smith Point on
77 May 11, 2023, at the age of 101; and
88 WHEREAS, The daughter of Jessie Ralph Stephenson and Ruby
99 Lena Nelson, the former Evelyn Stephenson was born in Corpus
1010 Christi on May 11, 1922; she grew up as the oldest of seven
1111 siblings, and in 1927 her family moved to Smith Point, where she
1212 began her education in a one-room schoolhouse; she then lived in
1313 Galveston with her grandmother for three years to attend Ball High
1414 School; after graduation, she married Morris Standley on September
1515 9, 1940; they were blessed with a son, Ronald Morris Standley; and
1616 WHEREAS, Mrs. Standley began working for the Anahuac
1717 Independent School District in 1945 as a bus driver; she gladly
1818 performed any task that needed to be done, and during summers, she
1919 helped her husband build a 40-foot shrimp boat; having taken
2020 college courses to become a dietician, she eventually oversaw three
2121 school cafeterias; she retired from Anahuac ISD in 1988; and
2222 WHEREAS, Dedicated to her community, Mrs. Standley was a
2323 founding member and an emergency care assistant for the Smith Point
2424 Volunteer Fire Department; for decades, she served both that
2525 department and Chambers County Fire and Rescue as treasurer and
2626 secretary; a lifelong member of Smith Point Community Church, she
2727 also served the church as secretary and treasurer for over 40 years
2828 and taught Sunday school as well; she kept the books for numerous
2929 groups and gave generously of her time and talents to a host of
3030 organizations, among them the Chambers County 4-H Horse Club,
3131 American Legion Auxiliary, and the United Daughters of the
3232 Confederacy; moreover, she shared her knowledge extensively with
3333 the Chambers County Historical Commission for the benefit of future
3434 generations, donated items with detailed information, and helped
3535 tend cemeteries and place markers; and
3636 WHEREAS, Evelyn Standley made a lasting, positive difference
3737 through her wide-ranging contributions, and she will be remembered
3838 with deep admiration and affection by all who were privileged to
3939 know her; now, therefore, be it
4040 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4141 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Linnie Evelyn
4242 Stephenson Standley and extend sincere condolences to the members
4343 of her family: to her daughter-in-heart, Linda Vaughan, and her
4444 husband, Bugs; to her grandchildren, Morris Dwayne Standley and his
4545 wife, Michele, Dustin Lynn Standley and his wife, Julie, Davonna
4646 Marie Wilson and her husband, Phillip, John Louis Cionek and his
4747 wife, Janet, Clayton Ray Vaughan and his wife, Tiffany, and Brandon
4848 Cole Vaughan; to her brother, Charles Jesse "Tootie" Stephenson; to
4949 her 12 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren; and to
5050 her many other relatives and friends; and, be it further
5151 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5252 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
5353 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Evelyn
5454 Standley.
