| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Residents of Calhoun County are gathering in Austin |

| 6 | 6 | | on March 9, 2023, to observe Calhoun County Day at the State |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Capitol; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Located on the Gulf Coast between Houston and Corpus |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Christi, Calhoun County was formed in 1846 from parts of Victoria, |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Jackson, and Matagorda Counties and took its name from John C. |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Calhoun, a politician from South Carolina who advocated for Texas |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | statehood; Lavaca served as the first county seat, and though the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | county seat was later moved to Indianola, it returned to the renamed |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Port Lavaca in 1887; the county features several other notable |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | communities, including Point Comfort, which sits on the opposite |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | side of Lavaca Bay from Port Lavaca, Seadrift on the San Antonio |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Bay, and Port O'Connor, located on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway; |

| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Boasting around 560 miles of coastline and extensive |

| 20 | 20 | | coastal prairies and marshes, Calhoun County is a popular fishing |

| 21 | 21 | | destination, and the eight Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail sites |

| 22 | 22 | | in the county provide birders and wildlife photographers an |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | opportunity to see more than 400 species of birds; residents and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | visitors also enjoy a number of annual events, including the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Calhoun County Fair, the Flip Flop Festival, and the Bayfront Beats |

| 26 | 26 | | summer concert series; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich and colorful history as they |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | work together to build a bright future, the citizens of Calhoun |

| 29 | 29 | | County may take justifiable pride in the important role their |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | unique region continues to play in the story of the Lone Star State; |

| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |

| 33 | 33 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 9, 2023, as Calhoun County Day |
