44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, A rich and purposeful life drew to a close with the
66 passing of Sammie Charles Harris on March 12, 2023, at the age of
77 79; and
88 WHEREAS, The son of Sammie Lysha Harris, Betty Stockton
99 Harris, and Cloteal Harris, Sammie Harris was born on June 18, 1943,
1010 in Houston, and he grew up with two brothers, Rector and Roby, and a
1111 sister, Donna; he attended Jack Yates High School, where he was an
1212 honors student and a member of the swim and basketball teams and the
1313 cheerleading squad, and he continued his studies at the University
1414 of New Mexico, becoming one of the first students to integrate the
1515 school's swim team; he later graduated from Prairie View A&M
1616 University with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, and
1717 he went on to enjoy a successful career as an engineer with Union
1818 Carbide and Lockheed Martin, among other companies; and
1919 WHEREAS, A Vietnam veteran, Mr. Harris was a captain in the
2020 U.S. Army and the recipient of a number of recognitions, including
2121 the National Defense Service Medal and the Bronze Star Medal; he
2222 served his community as well, and for many decades, he recruited and
2323 mentored students at historically Black colleges and universities;
2424 in his leisure time, he enjoyed playing golf; and
2525 WHEREAS, Mr. Harris shared a rewarding marriage with his wife
2626 of 57 years, Selma, and he took great pride in their daughters,
2727 Tatia and Courtney; as the years passed, he was further blessed with
2828 six grandchildren, Brittany, Gaston, Hunter, Mya, Ryan, and Collin,
2929 and three great-grandchildren, Mason, Kamryn, and Malakye; and
3030 WHEREAS, Dedicated to his family, his faith, and his
3131 community, Sammie Harris will forever be a source of inspiration to
3232 those he leaves behind; now, therefore, be it
3333 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
3434 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Sammie Charles Harris
3535 and extend heartfelt sympathy to all those who mourn his passing;
3636 and, be it further
3737 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3838 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
3939 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Sammie
4040 Harris.
