55 WHEREAS, Legendary quarterback Tom Brady announced his
66 retirement on February 1, 2023, concluding an illustrious
77 professional football career that spanned 23 seasons; and
88 WHEREAS, Widely regarded as the greatest quarterback of all
99 time, Mr. Brady is the National Football League's all-time leader
1010 in passing yards, touchdown throws, and Pro Bowl selections; chosen
1111 as the league's Most Valuable Player on 3 occasions, he has won a
1212 record 7 Super Bowl rings in 10 overall appearances; and
1313 WHEREAS, Thomas Edward Patrick Brady Jr. was born on
1414 August 3, 1977, in San Mateo, California; a star baseball and
1515 football player in high school, he was selected by the Montreal
1616 Expos in the 1995 Major League Baseball Draft but instead opted to
1717 play football at the University of Michigan; and
1818 WHEREAS, In 2000, the New England Patriots famously waited
1919 until the sixth round of the NFL Draft to select Mr. Brady; after
2020 appearing in just one game during his rookie year, he took over as
2121 the starter for the Patriots in game two of the 2001 season, and his
2222 steady hand helped the team upset the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl
2323 XXXVI; he led New England to championships in 2004 and 2005, and
2424 during the 2007-2008 campaign, he threw 50 touchdown passes as the
2525 Patriots recorded the first 16-0 regular season record in league
2626 history and went on to play for the title; and
2727 WHEREAS, Under Mr. Brady's guidance, the Patriots returned
2828 to the Super Bowl five times between 2012 and 2019, capturing the
2929 title in 2015, 2017, and 2019; after joining the Tampa Bay
3030 Buccaneers, he tacked on a seventh championship in 2021 at the age
3131 of 43, becoming the oldest quarterback to win a Super Bowl; and
3232 WHEREAS, Mr. Brady is also renowned for his philanthropic
3333 work; he is a longtime supporter of Boys & Girls Clubs of America,
3434 and he has raised over $46 million for Best Buddies International, a
3535 global organization that supports people with disabilities;
3636 moreover, he is a cofounder of the TB12 Foundation, which helps
3737 at-risk athletes receive the care they need; and
3838 WHEREAS, Tom Brady has earned a special place in the pantheon
3939 of sports legends, and his myriad achievements on and off the field
4040 will continue to inspire football fans for many years to come; now,
4141 therefore, be it
4242 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4343 Legislature hereby honor Tom Brady for his NFL career and his civic
4444 engagement and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future;
4545 and, be it further
4646 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4747 prepared for Mr. Brady as an expression of high regard by the Texas
4848 House of Representatives.
