44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, For more than 300 years, the Camino Real de Tierra
66 Adentro played a vital role in the history, economy, and culture of
77 Mexico and the American Southwest; and
88 WHEREAS, Centuries before Europeans came to North America,
99 Native Americans maintained extensive trade routes between groups
1010 in what is now Texas and New Mexico and civilizations further south;
1111 when the first Spanish explorers arrived in the region in the early
1212 16th century, native peoples often guided them through this
1313 striking landscape along these traditional footpaths; and
1414 WHEREAS, In 1598, Don Juan de Oñate and his party crossed the
1515 Rio Grande near present-day El Paso and established a colony in New
1616 Mexico; for the next three centuries, what came to be known as the
1717 Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, or the Royal Road of the Interior,
1818 functioned as the principal conduit of commerce, agriculture,
1919 technology, languages, and religion between central Mexico and the
2020 American Southwest, running 1,600 miles from Mexico City at its
2121 southern end to San Juan Pueblo in New Mexico in the north; and
2222 WHEREAS, In 2010, UNESCO added the portion of the Camino Real
2323 that lies in Mexico to its prestigious World Heritage List; the
2424 designation highlighted five of the route's existing urban World
2525 Heritage sites that exemplify its cultural, commercial, religious,
2626 and geographical significance, as well as 55 historic sites,
2727 including bridges, chapels, former haciendas and convents, and
2828 other natural and manmade features, related to the use of the road;
2929 the American section of the Camino Real, which passes through El
3030 Paso, Albuquerque, and Santa Fe, was designated as a National
3131 Historic Trail by an act of Congress in 2000; and
3232 WHEREAS, Recognized by UNESCO for its "outstanding universal
3333 value," the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro represents the rich
3434 heritage of hundreds of years of human interchange between the
3535 cultures of Europe and the New World, and it serves as a vital and
3636 tangible reminder of the inextricable links between two great
3737 nations; now, therefore, be it
3838 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
3939 Legislature hereby recognize the cultural and historical
4040 significance of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro and commend all
4141 those involved in efforts to raise awareness of and preserve the
4242 legacy of this extraordinary international landmark.
