5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Amarillo Symphony is celebrating the 100th |
---|
6 | 6 | | anniversary of its founding throughout its 2023-2024 season; and |
---|
7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, The only professional symphony in the Texas |
---|
8 | 8 | | Panhandle region, the Amarillo Symphony traces its origins to 1924, |
---|
9 | 9 | | when a 12-member group of musicians known as the Philharmonic Club |
---|
10 | 10 | | began playing special concerts for residents in their homes; by |
---|
11 | 11 | | 1926, the club had a full-time conductor, Ellis B. Hall, the first |
---|
12 | 12 | | in a long line of maestros who have helped transform the group into |
---|
13 | 13 | | a full-fledged, professional symphonic ensemble; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, In the late 1960s, the Philharmonic changed its name |
---|
15 | 15 | | to the Amarillo Symphony; in 1968, it began playing in the Amarillo |
---|
16 | 16 | | Civic Center Auditorium, which served as its home for nearly four |
---|
17 | 17 | | decades, until the symphony moved to the Globe-News Center for the |
---|
18 | 18 | | Performing Arts in 2006; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, The Amarillo Symphony has grown alongside the |
---|
20 | 20 | | 25,000-square-mile region that it serves, and today, it consists of |
---|
21 | 21 | | 85 musicians who perform eight-concert seasons; the symphony is |
---|
22 | 22 | | committed to not only providing diverse, engaging, and inspiring |
---|
23 | 23 | | musical experiences to the public, but also fostering music |
---|
24 | 24 | | education through initiatives and events such as its Youth |
---|
25 | 25 | | Orchestra, Class Act program, educational concerts, and Greater |
---|
26 | 26 | | Southwest Music Festival; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of the past century, the Amarillo |
---|
28 | 28 | | Symphony has become an important part of the cultural fabric of the |
---|
29 | 29 | | Panhandle region, and it is a pleasure to join in celebrating the |
---|
30 | 30 | | longevity of this cherished institution and the many ways it has |
---|
31 | 31 | | enriched the community; now, therefore, be it |
---|
32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
33 | 33 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the centennial of the Amarillo |
---|
34 | 34 | | Symphony and commend its orchestra members, staff, and board of |
---|
35 | 35 | | directors for their hard work in fulfilling the organization's |
---|
36 | 36 | | mission to inspire, educate, and bring together Panhandle residents |
---|
37 | 37 | | through the power of music; and, be it further |

38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

39 | 39 | | prepared for the Amarillo Symphony as an expression of high regard |
