44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The Amarillo Symphony is celebrating the 100th
66 anniversary of its founding throughout its 2023-2024 season; and
77 WHEREAS, The only professional symphony in the Texas
88 Panhandle region, the Amarillo Symphony traces its origins to 1924,
99 when a 12-member group of musicians known as the Philharmonic Club
1010 began playing special concerts for residents in their homes; by
1111 1926, the club had a full-time conductor, Ellis B. Hall, the first
1212 in a long line of maestros who have helped transform the group into
1313 a full-fledged, professional symphonic ensemble; and
1414 WHEREAS, In the late 1960s, the Philharmonic changed its name
1515 to the Amarillo Symphony; in 1968, it began playing in the Amarillo
1616 Civic Center Auditorium, which served as its home for nearly four
1717 decades, until the symphony moved to the Globe-News Center for the
1818 Performing Arts in 2006; and
1919 WHEREAS, The Amarillo Symphony has grown alongside the
2020 25,000-square-mile region that it serves, and today, it consists of
2121 85 musicians who perform eight-concert seasons; the symphony is
2222 committed to not only providing diverse, engaging, and inspiring
2323 musical experiences to the public, but also fostering music
2424 education through initiatives and events such as its Youth
2525 Orchestra, Class Act program, educational concerts, and Greater
2626 Southwest Music Festival; and
2727 WHEREAS, Over the course of the past century, the Amarillo
2828 Symphony has become an important part of the cultural fabric of the
2929 Panhandle region, and it is a pleasure to join in celebrating the
3030 longevity of this cherished institution and the many ways it has
3131 enriched the community; now, therefore, be it
3232 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
3333 Legislature hereby commemorate the centennial of the Amarillo
3434 Symphony and commend its orchestra members, staff, and board of
3535 directors for their hard work in fulfilling the organization's
3636 mission to inspire, educate, and bring together Panhandle residents
3737 through the power of music; and, be it further
3838 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3939 prepared for the Amarillo Symphony as an expression of high regard
4040 by the Texas House of Representatives.
