| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Brian Beck-Smith of DeSoto High School has been |

| 6 | 6 | | named the 2023 Secondary Teacher of the Year in the DeSoto |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Independent School District; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A solid education is vital for young people to |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | become successful and productive adults, and those men and women |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | who dedicate their careers to teaching make a positive difference |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | in the lives of their students and in the greater community; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Beck-Smith has taught mathematics at DeSoto |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | High School since 2012; over the course of his tenure, he has also |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | served as math team leader for Pre-AP and AP Mathematics, and he |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | introduced the district's first advanced course involving |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | multivariable calculus and linear algebra; in addition to his role |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | at DeSoto High, he is an adjunct professor at the University of |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | North Texas at Dallas and a mathematics lead teacher in the Future |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Comets Program at The University of Texas at Dallas; he holds a |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | bachelor's degree from UTD and a master's degree from UNT Dallas, |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | and he previously served as chair of the mathematics department at |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Lincoln High School in Dallas; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Brian Beck-Smith exemplifies the passion, |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | determination, and innovative spirit that are the hallmarks of our |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | best teachers, and he has set a standard of excellence to which all |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | in his profession may aspire; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Brian Beck-Smith on his selection |

| 29 | 29 | | as the 2023 Secondary Teacher of the Year in the DeSoto Independent |

| 30 | 30 | | School District and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued |
