| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Arte Texas, an organization dedicated to restoring |

| 6 | 6 | | and creating murals in East Austin, is doing commendable work to |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | preserve the unique cultural identity of this historic community; |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, In 2015, Bertha Delgado enlisted a group of East |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Austin artists to form Arte Texas in an effort to ensure the |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | continued existence of Chicano murals in the rapidly changing |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | neighborhood; hailing from a family with deep roots in East Austin, |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Ms. Delgado led the organization in securing community support for |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | its first project, the restoration of a mural known as La Lotería, |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | which was completed through the collective efforts of members of |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | the group and a number of local volunteers; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Beyond restoring iconic murals, Arte Texas has led |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | the way in reinvigorating public spaces in East Austin through the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | creation of new murals evoking the history and character of the |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | area; recently, Ms. Delgado's team completed a mural depicting |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | civil rights activist Cesar Chavez, which showcases the vibrant |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | colors and intricate details that have historically been featured |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | in works of street art on the east side; Arte Texas collaborated |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | with the East Town Lake Citizens Neighborhood Association and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | nearby business owners to bring the mural to life, and the project |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | received official endorsement with a proclamation from the City of |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Austin; and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Arte Texas is demonstrating the power of public art |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | to celebrate creative expression, foster a sense of cultural pride, |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | and reflect and embrace the diversity of the surrounding community, |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | and the organization is making an invaluable contribution to East |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Austin through its many endeavors; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Legislature hereby honor Arte Texas for its work to preserve and |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | create murals in East Austin and extend to Bertha Delgado and all |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | those involved in furthering the mission of the organization |

| 37 | 37 | | sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further |
