5	5	WHEREAS, On the morning of September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists
6	6	hijacked four civilian airplanes in the skies over the United
7	7	States; the worst terror attack on the American people in the
8	8	country's history proceeded to unfold on that horrific day; in a
9	9	coordinated attack, the hijackers intentionally flew two of the
10	10	planes into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center and a third
11	11	into the Pentagon; and
12	12	WHEREAS, Learning about the other hijackings, passengers and
13	13	crew members on the fourth plane, Flight 93, launched a
14	14	counterattack, spurring the hijacker pilot to crash the plane into
15	15	a field in Pennsylvania; nearly 3,000 people were killed in the
16	16	different locations, the single largest loss of life resulting from
17	17	a foreign attack on American soil; and
18	18	WHEREAS, While September 11 will forever be remembered as a
19	19	day of tragedy and loss, we also remember the selfless
20	20	determination of law enforcement officers, firefighters, and other
21	21	rescue workers who charged into danger that morning and in the days
22	22	after; these first responders continued to show up and search for
23	23	survivors and remains in the days and weeks after the attacks, and
24	24	many of these heroes lost their lives assisting the people who were
25	25	trapped and injured; and
26	26	WHEREAS, United in grief, Americans helped in every way
27	27	possible; we gave blood and said prayers, with some even
28	28	volunteering to help in the rescue and recovery efforts at the World
29	29	Trade Center, Pentagon, and Flight 93 sites; we performed acts of
30	30	charity and comforted each other, and we stood united as a nation;
31	31	and
32	32	WHEREAS, In December 2001, the U.S. Congress passed a joint
33	33	resolution designating September 11 of each year as Patriot Day; on
34	34	that solemn anniversary, we lower our flags and bow our heads for a
35	35	moment of silence; this day reminds us that our nation is still
36	36	working to effectively combat terrorism that threatens the United
37	37	States of America, while remembering the brave souls who have lost
38	38	their lives in the process; and
39	39	WHEREAS, Patriot Day is a tribute to the innocent and those
40	40	who died trying to rescue them; it is also a pledge to carry on their
41	41	legacies and remain steadfast in our commitment to our country, our
42	42	neighbors, and our character; now, therefore, be it
43	43	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
44	44	Legislature hereby commemorate Patriot Day 2023 on the 22nd
45	45	anniversary of these attacks and honor with our memories and our
46	46	actions those who were injured and those who died in the
47	47	September 11 attacks.
