44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, On the morning of September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists
66 hijacked four civilian airplanes in the skies over the United
77 States; the worst terror attack on the American people in the
88 country's history proceeded to unfold on that horrific day; in a
99 coordinated attack, the hijackers intentionally flew two of the
1010 planes into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center and a third
1111 into the Pentagon; and
1212 WHEREAS, Learning about the other hijackings, passengers and
1313 crew members on the fourth plane, Flight 93, launched a
1414 counterattack, spurring the hijacker pilot to crash the plane into
1515 a field in Pennsylvania; nearly 3,000 people were killed in the
1616 different locations, the single largest loss of life resulting from
1717 a foreign attack on American soil; and
1818 WHEREAS, While September 11 will forever be remembered as a
1919 day of tragedy and loss, we also remember the selfless
2020 determination of law enforcement officers, firefighters, and other
2121 rescue workers who charged into danger that morning and in the days
2222 after; these first responders continued to show up and search for
2323 survivors and remains in the days and weeks after the attacks, and
2424 many of these heroes lost their lives assisting the people who were
2525 trapped and injured; and
2626 WHEREAS, United in grief, Americans helped in every way
2727 possible; we gave blood and said prayers, with some even
2828 volunteering to help in the rescue and recovery efforts at the World
2929 Trade Center, Pentagon, and Flight 93 sites; we performed acts of
3030 charity and comforted each other, and we stood united as a nation;
3131 and
3232 WHEREAS, In December 2001, the U.S. Congress passed a joint
3333 resolution designating September 11 of each year as Patriot Day; on
3434 that solemn anniversary, we lower our flags and bow our heads for a
3535 moment of silence; this day reminds us that our nation is still
3636 working to effectively combat terrorism that threatens the United
3737 States of America, while remembering the brave souls who have lost
3838 their lives in the process; and
3939 WHEREAS, Patriot Day is a tribute to the innocent and those
4040 who died trying to rescue them; it is also a pledge to carry on their
4141 legacies and remain steadfast in our commitment to our country, our
4242 neighbors, and our character; now, therefore, be it
4343 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4444 Legislature hereby commemorate Patriot Day 2023 on the 22nd
4545 anniversary of these attacks and honor with our memories and our
4646 actions those who were injured and those who died in the
4747 September 11 attacks.
