5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Becky Moeller of Corpus Christi was inducted into |
---|
6 | 6 | | the Texas Labor Hall of Fame on January 20, 2022; and |
---|
7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, The first woman to hold statewide elected office in |
---|
8 | 8 | | the Texas AFL-CIO, Ms. Moeller became secretary-treasurer in 2003 |
---|
9 | 9 | | and president in 2007; during her tenure in leading the state |
---|
10 | 10 | | organization, she was instrumental in the advancement of |
---|
11 | 11 | | get-out-the-vote efforts, which contributed to the success of |
---|
12 | 12 | | candidates supportive of the labor movement; she also worked |
---|
13 | 13 | | tirelessly in behalf of issues vital to members, including equal |
---|
14 | 14 | | pay for equal work, the $15-per-hour minimum wage, expanded health |
---|
15 | 15 | | care access, workplace benefits for same-sex couples, immigration |
---|
16 | 16 | | reform, and fair trade; moreover, she emphasized leadership |
---|
17 | 17 | | development, strengthened the relationship between the Texas and |
---|
18 | 18 | | national AFL-CIO organizations, and raised awareness of the need to |
---|
19 | 19 | | intensify organizing across the South; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Moeller began her involvement in the labor |
---|
21 | 21 | | movement in 1967, while working in sales for Southwestern Bell; |
---|
22 | 22 | | discovering a huge gender disparity in pay, she joined with other |
---|
23 | 23 | | women in her office to fight for fair treatment; she became |
---|
24 | 24 | | president of Communications Workers of America Local 6137 and |
---|
25 | 25 | | eventually rose to become its vice president and |
---|
26 | 26 | | secretary-treasurer; in addition, she was president of the Coastal |
---|
27 | 27 | | Bend Labor Council; since her retirement in 2015, she has remained |
---|
28 | 28 | | active as a voice for labor; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Benefiting the wider community, Ms. Moeller has |
---|
30 | 30 | | served on the local United Way board of governors and the Corpus |
---|
31 | 31 | | Christi Workforce Development Board; she was appointed chair of the |
---|
32 | 32 | | commission overseeing the Texas Department of Licensing and |
---|
33 | 33 | | Regulation by Governor Ann Richards in 1992 and held that post until |
---|
34 | 34 | | 1995; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, A trailblazer and a tireless champion of Texas |
---|
36 | 36 | | workers, Becky Moeller made a positive impact in countless lives |
---|
37 | 37 | | through her vision, leadership, and dedication, and she is indeed |
---|
38 | 38 | | deserving of this prestigious honor; now, therefore, be it |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
40 | 40 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Becky Moeller on her induction into |
---|
41 | 41 | | the Texas Labor Hall of Fame and extend to her sincere best wishes |
---|
