44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Becky Moeller of Corpus Christi was inducted into
66 the Texas Labor Hall of Fame on January 20, 2022; and
77 WHEREAS, The first woman to hold statewide elected office in
88 the Texas AFL-CIO, Ms. Moeller became secretary-treasurer in 2003
99 and president in 2007; during her tenure in leading the state
1010 organization, she was instrumental in the advancement of
1111 get-out-the-vote efforts, which contributed to the success of
1212 candidates supportive of the labor movement; she also worked
1313 tirelessly in behalf of issues vital to members, including equal
1414 pay for equal work, the $15-per-hour minimum wage, expanded health
1515 care access, workplace benefits for same-sex couples, immigration
1616 reform, and fair trade; moreover, she emphasized leadership
1717 development, strengthened the relationship between the Texas and
1818 national AFL-CIO organizations, and raised awareness of the need to
1919 intensify organizing across the South; and
2020 WHEREAS, Ms. Moeller began her involvement in the labor
2121 movement in 1967, while working in sales for Southwestern Bell;
2222 discovering a huge gender disparity in pay, she joined with other
2323 women in her office to fight for fair treatment; she became
2424 president of Communications Workers of America Local 6137 and
2525 eventually rose to become its vice president and
2626 secretary-treasurer; in addition, she was president of the Coastal
2727 Bend Labor Council; since her retirement in 2015, she has remained
2828 active as a voice for labor; and
2929 WHEREAS, Benefiting the wider community, Ms. Moeller has
3030 served on the local United Way board of governors and the Corpus
3131 Christi Workforce Development Board; she was appointed chair of the
3232 commission overseeing the Texas Department of Licensing and
3333 Regulation by Governor Ann Richards in 1992 and held that post until
3434 1995; and
3535 WHEREAS, A trailblazer and a tireless champion of Texas
3636 workers, Becky Moeller made a positive impact in countless lives
3737 through her vision, leadership, and dedication, and she is indeed
3838 deserving of this prestigious honor; now, therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4040 Legislature hereby congratulate Becky Moeller on her induction into
4141 the Texas Labor Hall of Fame and extend to her sincere best wishes
4242 for the future; and, be it further
4343 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4444 prepared for Ms. Moeller as an expression of high regard by the
4545 Texas House of Representatives.
