5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service drew to |

6 | 6 | | a close with the passing of U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) |

7 | 7 | | Richard Grimes Castle of Salado on December 1, 2022, at the age of |

8 | 8 | | 75; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The son of Alfred and Adele Castle, Rich Castle was |
---|
10 | 10 | | born in Rochester, New York, on December 21, 1946, and he grew up |
---|
11 | 11 | | with two siblings, Edward and Charles; in 1958, he moved with his |
---|
12 | 12 | | family to Dayton, Ohio; he graduated from Oakwood High School and |
---|
13 | 13 | | received a business degree from Ohio University in 1968; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Answering his nation's call to duty, Mr. Castle |
---|
15 | 15 | | completed U.S. Army basic training in 1969 and Officer Candidate |
---|
16 | 16 | | School at Fort Benning, Georgia, where he was commissioned as a |
---|
17 | 17 | | second lieutenant the following year; he subsequently transferred |
---|
18 | 18 | | to Fort Ord, California, and became a training officer, and in 1971 |
---|
19 | 19 | | and 1972, he served overseas with Military Assistance Command Teams |
---|
20 | 20 | | Vietnam; next assigned to Fort Hood in Killeen, he rose to the rank |
---|
21 | 21 | | of captain, and he was later sent to Hawaii, where he became a major |
---|
22 | 22 | | and battalion executive officer; he next attended Command and |
---|
23 | 23 | | General Staff College before returning to Fort Hood; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, While assigned to the 13th Corps Support Command at |
---|
25 | 25 | | Fort Hood, Mr. Castle met his future wife, Captain Deborah "Borah" |
---|
26 | 26 | | Van Dormolen; they exchanged wedding vows on December 18, 1987, and |
---|
27 | 27 | | shared more than a quarter century together before Mrs. Castle's |
---|
28 | 28 | | death in 2013; the couple moved to Germany, where Mr. Castle was |
---|
29 | 29 | | promoted to lieutenant colonel, and he retired at Fort Hood in 1991; |
---|
30 | 30 | | his military awards included the Bronze Star Medal, the Army |
---|
31 | 31 | | Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the |
---|
32 | 32 | | Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Ribbon; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, After settling in Salado, Mr. Castle went on to |
---|
34 | 34 | | cofound the ElectriChef grill company; he and his wife traveled to |
---|
35 | 35 | | Alaska, Canada, and Scotland to pursue their love of fly-fishing, |
---|
36 | 36 | | and they also made happy memories on a cruise to Australia; |
---|
37 | 37 | | Mr. Castle's other interests included cooking and cheering on the |
---|
38 | 38 | | Cleveland Browns and Ohio State football teams; known for his |
---|
39 | 39 | | generosity, he assisted others with their college loan debt and |
---|
40 | 40 | | housing needs, and he supported a number of charitable entities; |
---|
41 | 41 | | and |
---|
42 | 42 | | WHEREAS, Rich Castle earned the lasting respect and |
---|
43 | 43 | | admiration of all who were privileged to know him, and he leaves |
---|
44 | 44 | | behind a legacy that his loved ones can remember with pride; now, |
---|
45 | 45 | | therefore, be it |

46 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
47 | 47 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of U.S. Army |
---|
48 | 48 | | Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Richard Grimes Castle and extend |

49 | 49 | | heartfelt condolences to his relatives and friends; and, be it |
