| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Vesak Day, one of the most important and sacred |

| 6 | 6 | | holidays to Buddhists worldwide, commemorates the life, |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | enlightenment, and death of the Buddha; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Born between 400 and 560 B.C., the Buddha, or |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Siddhartha Gautama, was the son of an Indian king; after leaving |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | behind his home and his royal title to become an ascetic, he |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | resolved to find an end to human suffering, which led to him |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | identifying the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | toward enlightenment; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Some 2,500 years later, followers of Buddhism honor |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | the legacy of the religion's founder on Vesak Day; depending on the |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | country where it is celebrated, the holiday occurs on the first full |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | moon of May, or on the full moon of the fourth lunar month; many |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | observe the holiday by reaffirming their commitment to the moral |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | precepts of Buddhism, performing good deeds, and devoting time to |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | chanting and meditation; other customs include lighting lanterns, |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | decorating with flowers, and enjoying traditional Asian dishes; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, The teachings of Buddha have inspired millions of |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | people around the globe to strive for inner peace and to demonstrate |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | greater compassion, tolerance, and understanding in their lives, |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | and it is fitting to acknowledge the great importance of Vesak Day |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | to Buddhists who reside in the Lone Star State and beyond; now, |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Legislature hereby recognize the significance of Vesak Day to |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | people of the Buddhist faith and extend sincere best wishes to our |

| 31 | 31 | | state's Buddhist community for a festive and meaningful observance |
