| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The students, faculty, and staff of Alvin Community |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | College are celebrating the 75th anniversary of the college's |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | founding in 2023; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Established on November 2, 1948, as part of Alvin |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | High School, Alvin Community College began its inaugural school |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | year the following September with a class of 134; in order to meet |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | the growing needs of its students, the college moved to a separate |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | facility, and it eventually relocated to its current campus in |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | 1963; having separated from the Alvin Independent School District |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | in 1971, the Alvin Junior College District nearly doubled its |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | service area a few years later and continued to expand with the |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | founding of the Pearland Center in 1998; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Today, ACC boasts a student body of nearly 5,000 and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | more than 50 associate's degree and certificate programs, including |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | those in a wide range of allied health and industrial fields; the |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | college also offers dual-credit courses, and each year, over 200 |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | students graduate from high school with an associate's degree |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | through ACC; moreover, the college maintains articulation |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | agreements with a number of universities to allow students to |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | transition directly into bachelor's degree programs, and it was the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | first Texas community college to create a law enforcement training |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | academy and to educate inmates in the Texas Department of Criminal |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Justice; and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Over the years, ACC has received a number of |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | accolades, including a Lifetime Achievement in Business Award from |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | the Alvin-Manvel Area Chamber of Commerce and a Partnership Award |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | for Community College Engagement from the Texas Workforce |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Commission, and it was named a Hispanic-Serving Institution by the |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | U.S. Department of Education; and |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, For three quarters of a century, Alvin Community |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | College has provided students with important opportunities in |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | higher education, and in so doing, it has enriched the lives of |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | countless Texans; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 75th anniversary of Alvin |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | Community College and extend to all those associated with the |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | college sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | prepared for Alvin Community College as an expression of high |
|---|
| 44 | 44 | | regard by the Texas House of Representatives. |
