5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Jamie Padgett of Rice University is being presented |

6 | 6 | | with the Edith and Peter O'Donnell Award in Engineering from the |

7 | 7 | | Texas Academy of Medicine, Engineering, Science and Technology in |

8 | 8 | | May 2023; and |

9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Established in 2006, the O'Donnell Awards annually |
---|
10 | 10 | | recognize Texas-based researchers who are addressing the essential |
---|
11 | 11 | | role that science and technology play in society, and whose work |
---|
12 | 12 | | meets the highest standards of professional performance, |
---|
13 | 13 | | creativity, and resourcefulness; honorees are selected in five |
---|
14 | 14 | | categories, medicine, engineering, biological sciences, physical |
---|
15 | 15 | | sciences, and technology innovation, and each award includes a |
---|
16 | 16 | | $25,000 honorarium as well as an invitation to present at TAMEST's |
---|
17 | 17 | | annual conference; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Jamie Padgett is being recognized for her lifesaving |
---|
19 | 19 | | research in infrastructure sustainability and resiliency in |
---|
20 | 20 | | hazard-prone regions; her work focuses on identifying and |
---|
21 | 21 | | minimizing the risks that natural disasters and other hazards pose |
---|
22 | 22 | | to critical infrastructure, such as highways and industrial |
---|
23 | 23 | | facilities, and it has played an instrumental role in improving |
---|
24 | 24 | | public safety in communities across Texas and beyond; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, A skilled educator, Ms. Padgett is the Stanley C. |
---|
26 | 26 | | Moore Professor in Engineering and chair of the Department of Civil |
---|
27 | 27 | | and Environmental Engineering at Rice University; she has further |
---|
28 | 28 | | distinguished herself as a Fellow of the Structural Engineering |
---|
29 | 29 | | Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers and as a |
---|
30 | 30 | | founding chair of the organization's technical committee on |
---|
31 | 31 | | multiple hazard mitigation; moreover, she served on the ASCE |
---|
32 | 32 | | reconnaissance team that assessed damage caused by Hurricane |
---|
33 | 33 | | Katrina, and she has represented the United States at the National |
---|
34 | 34 | | Academy of Engineering China-America Frontiers of Engineering |
---|
35 | 35 | | Symposium in China; and |

36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Jamie Padgett's important research efforts have |

37 | 37 | | made a lasting, positive impact in her field, and she is truly |

38 | 38 | | deserving of this prestigious honor; now, therefore, be it |

39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |

40 | 40 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Jamie Padgett on her receipt of the |

41 | 41 | | Edith and Peter O'Donnell Award in Engineering from the Texas |
