| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Marek Kimmel of Rice University has been named a |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | 2023 fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Science; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, AAAS is the world's largest general scientific |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | society and the publisher of the respected journal Science, and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | each year since 1874, the organization has recognized exceptional |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | scientists, engineers, and innovators through its fellowship |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | program; among the highest honors in the scientific community, the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | AAAS fellowship is awarded to less than one percent of the |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | organization's members; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Marek Kimmel is a professor of statistics and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | associate department chair at Rice University, where he also serves |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | as director of the Interinstitutional Graduate Program in |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Biostatistics; his research focuses on mathematical modeling and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | statistical analysis in biosciences, particularly on the genetic |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | histories of diseases such as cancer, and their potential |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | application in preventing disease; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Kimmel holds a doctorate in technical sciences |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | and a master's degree in control engineering from Silesian |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Technical University in Poland; he is the author of several |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | academic publications, and he has served on the editorial boards of |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | a number of scientific journals; in 2002, he was awarded a State |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Professorship by the Republic of Poland, and he has been named a |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | fellow of the Mathematical Society of Paris and of the Institute of |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Advanced Study at Warwick University in the United Kingdom; and |

| 30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Marek Kimmel has distinguished himself as a leading |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | authority in his field, and his election as an AAAS Fellow |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | represents an impressive milestone in his career and a fitting |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | tribute to his invaluable contributions to the body of scientific |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | knowledge; now, therefore, be it |

| 35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |

| 36 | 36 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Marek Kimmel on being named a |

| 38 | 38 | | Science and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success |
