55 WHEREAS, Texas native Jack Ingram has been selected for
66 induction into the Texas Songwriters Hall of Fame as a member of the
77 Class of 2024; and
88 WHEREAS, Each year, the Texas Heritage Songwriters
99 Association holds an annual hall of fame awards ceremony to
1010 recognize songwriters who represent the spirit of the Lone Star
1111 State; and
1212 WHEREAS, One of the most successful artists to emerge from
1313 the 1990s "Texas Country" scene, Jack Owen Ingram grew up in The
1414 Woodlands loving country music but did not begin playing guitar and
1515 writing songs until his freshman year at Southern Methodist
1616 University; early in his career, he cut his teeth at Adair's Saloon,
1717 an institution of the Deep Ellum entertainment district, and he and
1818 his band quickly gained a reputation across the state for their
1919 charismatic live performances; at the age of 22, he self-released
2020 his debut, Jack Ingram, featuring takes on Willie Nelson and Robert
2121 Earl Keen tunes as well as the original "Beat Up Ford," a song that
2222 would become an anthem to a generation of Texas country music fans;
2323 he cemented his status as one of the state's most promising
2424 songwriters with his subsequent albums, Lonesome Questions and Live
2525 at Adair's, which sold tens of thousands of copies despite a lack of
2626 major label support; and
2727 WHEREAS, Warner Music Group signed Mr. Ingram to its Rising
2828 Tide offshoot in 1996, and he recorded Livin' or Dyin' with the
2929 support of legendary Texas songwriter Steve Earle; the label folded
3030 shortly after releasing the album, and he was then picked up by
3131 Sony's Lucky Dog imprint, where he released Hey You in 1999 and
3232 Electric in 2002, albums widely regarded as two of his best; he
3333 scored a number one country single with "Wherever You Are," in 2005,
3434 and his eighth studio album, Big Dreams & High Hopes, featured the
3535 top-10 hit, "Barefoot and Crazy"; in the following decade, he found
3636 further success with Midnight Motel, one of his most personal and
3737 heartfelt efforts; The Marfa Tapes, his 2021 release with Miranda
3838 Lambert and Jon Randall, was nominated for a Grammy Award for best
3939 country album; and
4040 WHEREAS, Over the years, Mr. Ingram has given generously of
4141 his time and talents to countless charitable groups, and his work as
4242 part of Mack, Jack, and McConaughey with former football coach Mack
4343 Brown and actor Matthew McConaughey has raised millions of dollars
4444 for children's causes; a mentor to younger artists, Mr. Ingram is
4545 also a supporter of Texas Songwriter U, an annual program
4646 consisting of a songwriting competition, an educational workshop,
4747 and a showcase event; and
4848 WHEREAS, With his beautifully crafted songs that exemplify
4949 the independent spirit of Texas music, Jack Ingram has earned a
5050 special place in the pantheon of singer-songwriters from the Lone
5151 Star State, and he is indeed deserving of this prestigious honor;
5252 now, therefore, be it
5353 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
5454 Legislature hereby congratulate Jack Ingram on his selection as a
5555 2024 inductee into the Texas Songwriters Hall of Fame and extend to
5656 him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
5757 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5858 prepared for Mr. Ingram as an expression of high regard by the Texas
5959 House of Representatives.
